In this challenging scenario for the entire sector, organic wine emerges as one of the most dynamic areas of the sector, driven by the growing attention to environmental sustainability and greater resilience to the climate emergency, also thanks to innovations that respect the environment and preserve soil fertility. According to a recent analysis by InsightAce Analytic, the organic wine sector is set to triple by 2030, reaching a value of 25 billion dollars compared to the 9 billion recorded in 2021.
Italy confirms its position among the world leaders in the production of organic wine. With a vineyard area of 133 thousand hectares, representing 23% of the national vineyard, with peaks reaching 40% in Tuscany and 36% in Sicily, and over 30,000 dedicated operators, organic viticulture is acquiring an increasingly important role in the sector.
This trend is also reflected in the market performance. According to data from the Wine Monitor observatory of Nomisma, in 2023 organic wine sales in Italy reached 57.5 million euros, with an increase of 6.5%. Considering the globality of the distribution channels, the growth in sales of organic labels is higher than that of conventional ones, which in the same period stood at 2.8%. Even at an international level, despite a complex market context, in recent years there has been an increase in the consumption of organic labels, confirming the growing attention towards high-quality products with a sustainable supply chain.
At Vinitaly, in addition to drawing attention to the reduction of the environmental impact of wine production without synthetic chemicals, FederBio will curate a rich calendar of MasterClasses and guided tastings of the best regional organic and biodynamic labels, in the Vinitaly Bio pavilion - Area C, enhancing the history, traditions and culture of the territories of origin that give identity and character to the productions.
"We are undoubtedly concerned about the duties imposed by the US administration that penalize Italy, one of the main exporters of wine in the American market and a privileged destination also for organic and biodynamic labels - underlined Maria Grazia Mammuccini , President of FederBio - The duties are a wrong and counterproductive policy for everyone, on which we must act quickly as Europe. Faced with current challenges, it is important to continue with the diffusion of organic viticulture, crucial for the agroecological transition because it is able to protect biodiversity and ecosystems, which is gaining more and more consensus and can provide a significant boost to the sector even in this very complex phase. The union between the designation of origin and a certified sustainable production, such as organic, constitutes a fundamental strength, not only for the quality of the product, but also for the identity of the wine, an authentic expression of a territorial vocation. Designations of origin and organic certification are, moreover, the only official certifications regulated at European level, with specific regulations and a rigorous control system. This guarantees that the consumer can have full confidence in the product he buys”.
