The ampelographic base of Colli Berici Rosso and Bianco has been expanded and the pergola system has been introduced for all varieties grown exclusively on hills.

The changes to the Colli Berici DOC production regulations have officially come into force. The main changes concern the expansion of the ampelographic base for Colli Berici Bianco and Colli Berici Rosso and the inclusion of the pergola training system for new and replanted vineyards on hillsides.

Following publication in the Official Journal on August 19, 2026, the production of Colli Berici Rosso is permitted to use at least 60% of Merlot, Tai Rosso, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties—whereas previously only Merlot and Tai Rosso were permitted—, up to 40% Carmenère and/or Pinot Noir, and up to a maximum of 15% of other red grape varieties authorized in the province of Vicenza.

Similarly, Colli Berici Bianco is now open to Garganega, Chardonnay, and Pinot Bianco, either alone or in combination, for a minimum of 60%, while Manzoni Bianco, Tai Bianco, and Sauvignon Blanc can make up to 40%, along with up to 15% of other authorized white grape varieties. This represents a substantial change from the previous regulations, which almost exclusively permitted Garganega and Sauvignon Blanc as the base wine.

"These changes are intended to offer winemakers greater freedom to interpret the terroir ," stated Consortium Director Giovanni Ponchia and President Silvio Dani . "The introduction of new varietals and blends for Colli Berici Bianco and Rosso allows for a more detailed and personal interpretation of the denomination . Furthermore, the introduction of the pergola training system for all hillside varietals is a concrete tool for addressing the new climate challenges that can alter the quality parameters of the grapes."

The traditional pergola , previously reserved for Garganega alone, helps protect the bunches from direct sunlight and maintain the right level of acidity in the berries. It could become a fundamental tool in managing hot years like 2026, with a generally early harvest also due to the high temperatures.

The entry into force of the new specification was communicated during the first day of Gustus 2026 – Wines and Flavors of Vicenza , the event dedicated to the discovery and exploration of the wines of the Colli Berici, Vicenza, and Gambellara DOCs, took place on September 19th and 20th at the Arrigo Pedrollo Conservatory in Vicenza. The event was well received by an audience largely composed of industry professionals and dedicated enthusiasts , with both WineLabs selling out: Tai Rosso between trends and climate challenges: a vocation for change , presented by Best Sommelier of Veneto 2018 and Best Sommelier of Italy 2023, Cristian Maitan, and The Time of Gambellara: a journey through character and longevity, led by wine educator Fabio Gobbi.
