The Ordinary Meeting of Members of the Primitivo di Manduria Consortium took place yesterday, Thursday, April 23, 2026, during which all agenda items were unanimously approved.
During the meeting, the Assembly approved the 2025 financial statement, the activity report, and the 2026 budget, confirming the Consortium's sound management and consistent strategies.
At the center of the work was the approval of the regulation authorizing the use of the “Primitivo di Manduria DOC and DOCG” designations in composite, processed, or transformed products.
The regulation governs the use of the name "Primitivo di Manduria" in products other than wine that contain it as an ingredient, with a clear objective: to protect the denomination and ensure maximum transparency for consumers.
In concrete terms, a company cannot freely use the name “Primitivo di Manduria”, but must comply with precise criteria and obtain specific authorization from the Consortium.
Among the fundamental principles, wine must be a significant and defining ingredient of the final product , with the percentage clearly indicated on the label. Therefore, marginal use for promotional purposes is not sufficient.
Great attention is also paid to providing correct consumer information: it must always be clear that Primitivo di Manduria is an ingredient and not the product itself, avoiding any risk of confusion.
The regulation also defines how the denomination must be used on labels: the name "Primitivo di Manduria" must appear in smaller characters, between quotation marks, and accompanied by the wording DOC or DOCG. The use of the official denomination logos is not permitted.
To obtain authorization, operators must submit a formal request to the Consortium, along with technical documentation and draft labeling. The authorization will be issued for each individual product, will be valid for three years, and will be subject to periodic inspections.
Authorized companies must demonstrate the actual use of the wine, ensure traceability, and report production volumes. In the event of irregularities, the Consortium may revoke the authorization and order the recall of non-compliant products.
Using a denomination as an ingredient represents a distinctive element for the final product , helping to strengthen its positioning and perception of quality. The denomination name acts as a recognized guarantee, while compliance with specifications ensures consistent standards and defined characteristics. At the same time, the connection to the territory allows for the valorization of origin, identity, and know-how, elements increasingly crucial for a consumer attentive to quality, traceability, and authenticity. In this context, the certified ingredient becomes a true qualifying element of the entire product.

The approval of this instrument represents a strategic step for the Consortium, which consolidates its role in managing and overseeing the use of the denomination, defining a clear framework of rules and responsibilities.
"With this regulation, we are taking another step in protecting and developing the denomination," stated President Novella Pastorelli . "Clear and rigorous criteria have been established to ensure quality, transparency, and consistency in the use of our wine, even when used as an ingredient in other products. This is also an important step forward from a commercial perspective for the Primitivo di Manduria PDO, which will benefit from the prestige of quality food products, creating a virtuous relationship of mutual valorization. On the one hand, the processed product will benefit from the reputation of the PDO, and on the other, the denomination itself will be able to expand its market presence, gaining new visibility and further commercial resonance through the distribution of these products."
