The Consorzio della Vernaccia di San Gimignano, representing the producers of one of Italy’s oldest and most prestigious wine denominations, expresses deep concern over the imposition of tariffs on Italian wine exports to the United States.

The market that represents a historic and fundamental commercial partner for Vernaccia di San Gimignano.

The threat of duties - the Consortium comments - has already led to a block on exports, with serious economic repercussions on agricultural businesses and the entire territory. In fact, tariff barriers do not only damage the wine sector, but also have a negative impact on the entire local economy, with dramatic consequences in terms of employment and related industries, putting at risk the competitiveness of Italian products, the stability of companies and, in general, the survival of a sector that is crucial to the economy of the territories.

"In the face of this threat, it is essential that the institutions, with the support of all the actors involved, intervene collectively and promptly to safeguard our productive heritage and defend Italian excellence. With great concern, we have today addressed the Prime Minister and the Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests to urge decisive intervention to defend our wine sector, today seriously endangered by the recent threats of duties and tariff barriers. A sector that is not only the beating heart of our agricultural economy, but which represents, in the world, our cultural and gastronomic heritage.

To preserve the excellence of our country in the world, we hope for a constructive dialogue directly with American institutions to find solutions that protect the interests of Italian producers, the activation of support and compensation measures for economic losses to companies that risk suffering direct economic damage, the incentive of innovation and promotion on international markets to relaunch exports and protect the quality of our products with a renewed international promotion of Made in Italy where the protection of our brand and our identity is a long-term investment for future generations of producers.

Finally, it becomes strategic to explore new markets for the creation of alternative distribution channels where the search for new commercial outlets can represent an opportunity for growth and diversification for our sector, reducing dependence on traditional markets and increasing the resilience of our companies"
declares the President of the Consortium of Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Irina Strozzi.
