Lambrusco

The origin of this grape variety is contained in its own name, which means "wild vine" and dates back to Roman times. Even Pliny the Elder, Virgil, Catone and Terenzio Varrone, 2000 years ago, referred to this grape grown in north central Italy at the times of the Etruscans, whose presence and importance has been documented several times over the centuries. Only in 1867 the agronomist Francesco Aggazzotti proposed a first subdivision of this variety in three grown types: Lambrusco della Viola o di Sorbara, Lambrusco Salamino and Lambrusco dei Graspi Rossi. The area of production is concentrated in the provinces of Modena and Reggio Emilia, though different varieties are spread in other parts of the region and in the southeastern sector of Lombardy.
