Market Trends & International Scenario

Alarm for Italian wine: consumption drops and exports contract

The UIV Observatory (Italian Wine Union) reports a sharp slowdown in the first quarter of 2025: volumes to non-EU markets fell by 9% , while the value remains almost stable (-0.1%). The United States recorded an anomalous 4%, but due to the rush to pre-duty purchases, now slowing down sharply.

“We cannot confuse exports with real consumption,” warns Lamberto Frescobaldi , president of UIV.

US tariffs: up to 190 million euros at risk for Italian wine

According to Confcooperative , the imposition of 10% duties on European spirits could cost Italian wine up to 190 million euros and a loss of volumes between 8% and 12% . A very hard blow for the first export market of our wine (1.94 billion euros in 2024, 10.2% compared to 2023).

European Wine and Spirits Against EU Retaliatory Tariffs

The CEEV (Comité Européen des Entreprises Vins) takes a stand: the goal is to exclude US wine from possible countermeasures by the European Union. "The sector must not become hostage to trade disputes," said secretary Ignacio Sánchez Recarte.

Consumption and Culture: between tradition and new generations

Millennials, Gen Z and Boomers: How Much Does Tradition Still Matter in Wine?

The identity of wine is confronted with new generations: if "high involved" consumers seek quality and territorial stories, the "low involved" ones, especially the younger ones, prefer price, brand and simplicity of taste . The success of White Zinfandel Barefoot is proof of this.

Wine and diet: the least caloric alcoholic beverages

A careful look at physical shape: Champagne is confirmed as the alcoholic drink with the fewest calories (85 kcal per 120 ml) . Light beers and straight spirits follow. Be careful with combinations with sugary drinks: a cocktail can exceed 300 kcal !
