Italian wineries. Italian wine producers and current wine news.

Good morning,

Wine Idea presents the main news from the world of wine.

Wine Market

European wine exports are slowing. In the first four months of 2026, exports exceeded €5 billion, a 5% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. The decline is primarily due to lower prices on the US market.

Inventories are increasing in Italy. Wine cellars hold approximately 46.6 million hectoliters of wine, 6.7% more than last year. Including must, the total reaches 50.3 million hectoliters.

The slowdown in demand is also impacting prices. According to the Italian Wine Union, action is needed on production planning, markets, and the promotion of denominations.

Among the possible solutions being discussed is a reduction in yields. This measure could rebalance supply and demand, but it risks penalizing winemakers who deliver their grapes to cooperative wineries.

Balsamic Vinegar of Modena could offer an outlet for some of the surplus. Its production uses over 2.5 million quintals of grapes and up to 60 million liters of wine each year.

Italian wineries

The Zonin1821 Group's reorganization continues. Discussions are underway with investors interested in acquiring several Italian wine estates.

The Luca Calvini winery in Diano Castello has been recognized for its Vermentino. The result is the result of renovating the vineyards and pursuing a fresher, more contemporary style.

In Torrecuso, Cantina Torre a Oriente integrates wine, extra virgin olive oil, traditional cuisine, and hospitality, proposing a development model tied to the local area and wine tourism.

In the province of Avellino, the "Al Fresco di Cantina" project involves some inmates in vineyard and winery activities, offering professional training and new opportunities for social reintegration.

Italian wine and oenology

Vernaccia di San Gimignano celebrates 750 years since its first historical mention. In 1966, it was the first Italian wine to obtain the Controlled Designation of Origin (DOC).

During VinoVip Cortina, Piero Antinori, Angelo Gaja, Sandro Boscaini, and Fausto Maculan discussed the future of Italian wine. Priorities included quality, engagement with young people, identity preservation, wine tourism, and adaptation to climate change.

Walter Massa urges the sector to move beyond the constant narrative of the crisis. According to the Piedmontese producer, the future belongs to quality wines, recognizable and tied to their territory.

Pallagrello Bianco is back in the spotlight thanks to new interpretations focused on freshness and drinkability. The rediscovery of native grape varieties represents a concrete opportunity to differentiate the Italian wine market.

Europe, organic and agriculture

Italy, France, and Spain are calling on the European Union to maintain specific funds for the wine sector in the future Common Agricultural Policy.

Industry organizations believe adequate resources are needed to address declining consumption, rising costs, market instability, and climate change.

FederBio welcomes the revision of the European regulation on organic farming, but urges that the principles and guarantees of the system not be weakened.

Authorizations for new vineyards issued in 2023 will expire on July 31, 2026. By the same date, it will be possible to renounce, in whole or in part, the authorized areas.

International wine

In Champagne, Bruno Paillard demonstrates how it is possible to maintain freshness and balance even in very hot and dry years.

Quality comes from vineyard management, grape selection, and blending skills. Climate change makes agronomic and winemaking strategies increasingly important.

Events, culture and wine tourism

Tenuta di Castellaro presents “Sunset Live Music”: nine sunset concerts among the vineyards of the Aeolian Islands, from July 23rd to September 10th.

Morbegno in Cantina will return between September and October with fifty historic wineries and three weekends dedicated to Valtellina wines and heroic viticulture.

Tarquinia celebrates the twentieth anniversary of DiVino Etrusco with seven evenings dedicated to the wine, culture, music, and history of ancient Etruria.

In Selinunte, the Mandrarossa Literary Prize will unite books, wine, and archaeological heritage in the evocative setting of the Temple of Hera.

In Friuli-Venezia Giulia, “Moto & Sapori nel Collio” will offer an itinerary through the landscapes, cellars, wines, and local cuisine.

In Grado, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Via dei Sapori Dinner Show will present a 23-stop gastronomic journey on the beach, at sunset.

The picture of the day

The wine sector is undergoing a phase of profound transformation.

Rising inventories, price pressure, and slowing exports require new strategies.

Quality, territorial identity, production planning, innovation, new markets, and wine tourism will be increasingly important elements for the competitiveness of Italian wineries.

Thanks for listening.
