News on Italian wine and oenology

Italian wineries

  • San Gregorio and the native varieties of the Colli Senesi The family-run winery in Chiusi (SI) continues to promote grape varieties such as Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino, and Ciliegiolo, with 80,000 bottles produced annually and strong historical and cultural roots linked to its Etruscan heritage.
  • Cantina Valle Isarco, white and mountain The youngest cooperative in Alto Adige (1961) today has 135 members and 150 hectares, rediscovering varieties such as Sylvaner and Kerner. The sedimentary soil and 300 days of sunshine a year support a fresh, mineral, and flavorful production.
  • Bolgheri: Resilience and Strategies in the Age of Tariffs The 15% tariff imposed by the United States is forcing producers to rethink their planning and positioning: high-end wines are holding up, while the mid-range suffers from margins and uncertainty.

Italian wine

  • 2025 Harvest: Excellent Quality, Uncertain Market. Production is estimated at 47.4 million hectoliters (8% less than 2024), with healthy grapes and a top-quality vintage. Excess inventories and declining domestic and foreign consumption remain a key issue.
  • Exports in the first half of 2025: Veneto leads the way. Despite tariffs and geopolitical uncertainty, the sector recorded a 0.47% decline in value and a 3.1% decline in volume. Veneto leads with €1.4 billion (up 1.5%), driven by Prosecco and Veronese wines.
  • US tariffs: Italy pays the price. Companies absorb $61 million in tariffs in three months. Average price drops 13.5% (from $6.52 to $5.64/liter). France is slightly more affected, Spain lags behind.

Italian enology

  • From the vineyard to the cellar: where quality is born. Wine is made in the vineyard, but the cellar completes the work. Agronomic techniques and digital tools like Giovanni Bigot's 4Grapes app allow for precise monitoring of vigor, photosynthesis, and hydration.
  • Wine Business Program: A new wine management class is born. The training program promoted by Consorzio Italia del Vino and Luiss Business School has begun: 20 young people from Italy, Poland, and Kazakhstan, including undergraduates and graduates, will receive targeted training in wine management.

International

  • European Harvest: Divergent Signals Ignacio Sánchez Recarte (CEEV) highlights the 2025 production mosaic: Spain is declining due to climate events, Italy is the world's leading producer, and France is voluntarily reducing its potential with low yields and a 20,000-hectare cut.

Wine events

  • Vino al Vino 2025 – Panzano in Chianti (September 19-21) Thirtieth anniversary of the Panzano Winemakers' Union: over 80 labels for tasting in Piazza Bucciarelli.
  • Vinòforum 2025 closes with 80,000 attendees. Seven evenings in Piazza di Siena with 3,200 wines, 40 restaurants, and 60 chefs. The finale features the City of Pizza, won by Carlo Fiamma (Amalfi).
  • 50 Shades of Pinot Noir – Voghera (27-28 September) Sixth edition dedicated to Pinot Noir: 88 labels to taste from Oltrepò, Italian regions and international terroirs (France, USA, South Africa, New Zealand).
  • Franciacorta in Cantina 2025 (September 19-21) Local companies open their doors with visits, picnics, dinners, and sensory workshops dedicated to the Franciacorta Method.

Economic insight

  • Foreign businesses growing in Cuneo (7.4%). The Chamber of Commerce's report reports that companies led by foreign entrepreneurs have reached 5,301, representing 8.2% of the provincial total. This trend is the opposite of the general decline in local businesses.
