QUIDQUID presents a new summary of the main news from the Italian and international wine sector.

Italian wineries

• Veneto: Full cellars and pressure on prices. Regional stocks reach 11.5 million hectoliters (3.25%), while in Italy they exceed 46.5 million (6.7%). The sector is focusing on promotion and storage to avoid a price war before the harvest.

Villa Russiz expands its wine tourism offerings. The historic Collio winery opens its new restaurant, led by chef Alessio Tagliaferri, completing a project that integrates wine, hospitality, local culture, and social commitment.

Torre Varano Winery. The historic Taburno winery continues its growth by promoting Aglianico and Falanghina, along with the native grape varieties Greco, Fiano, and Coda di Volpe.

Parvus Ager and Gens Fabia have achieved international success. The two wineries have received important awards in international competitions, confirming the quality of their local production.

Colonna celebrates its wines. The Cifero Winery wins gold and silver medals at the Città del Vino International Wine Competition, showcasing the potential of the volcanic vineyards of the Castelli Romani.

Cantine di Castignano: governance crisis. After internal messages were shared on social media, President Omar Traini announced his resignation on the eve of the grape harvest, ushering in a delicate phase for the Marche-based cooperative.

Villa Russiz also takes center stage with its 2004 Sauvignon De La Tour. This historic Collio winery confirms the value of its great, long-aged white wines and its model, which combines winemaking quality with social purpose.

Italian wine and Italian oenology

• Record inventories in Italy. Italian warehouses hold over 46.5 million hectoliters of wine. Veneto holds nearly a quarter of the national stocks.

Exports remain weak. In the first four months of 2026, Italian exports fell by 3.7% in volume and 6.8% in value, with a particularly sharp contraction in non-EU markets and the United States.

The 2026 harvest has been brought forward. In Veneto, the harvest will begin around mid-August. Prosecco continues to show strong sales despite the general slowdown in consumption.

Climate and vineyards. Heat and water stress could bring forward the harvest by about a week, making it crucial to monitor conditions on a vineyard-by-vineyard basis.

Grapevine downy mildew. An in-depth look at one of the main viticultural diseases, focusing on symptoms, yield damage, and control strategies.

Summer wines. Interest is growing in fresh whites, rosés, and reds served slightly chilled. The market favors balanced, aromatic, and versatile wines.

International

• A new geography of European wine. Climate change is favoring the growth of viticulture in Northern Europe, while historic Mediterranean regions are facing high temperatures, drought, and early ripening.

Camargue: a new winemaking identity is born. A project is taking shape in France that aims to promote Camargue wines through a distinctive bottle and a strong integration of wine, water, biodiversity, and landscape.

Wine events

• Calici di Stelle Abruzzo 2026. From July 24th to August 16th, 25 wineries will be the protagonists with 63 events including tastings, music, guided tours, vineyard dinners, and stargazing.

Morbegno in Cantina 2026. Three weekends between September and October dedicated to Valtellina wines, with tastings in the city's historic cellars and palaces.

Le Notti del Vino (Wine Nights) in Velletri. The call for proposals for the 2026 edition of the event, scheduled for August 28th and 29th, dedicated to promoting local wine excellence, has been published.

La Subida (Friuli). The story of a family who transformed their home into a symbol of Italian food and wine hospitality, with a Michelin-starred restaurant, osteria, and hospitality immersed in the Collio region.
