ITALIAN WINE AND OENOLOGY

Wine exports: first quarter still difficult

Italian exports closed the quarter at €1.7 billion (-8.2%). Veneto, Piedmont, and Tuscany accounted for 66% of national exports. Piedmont was the only major region to see growth (0.5%).

Signs of recovery in March

After two very negative months, March saw a slight reversal of the trend, with increases in both the volumes and values exported to the European Union.

The United States remains the main problem

Exports to the American market are declining sharply, impacted by tariffs and trade uncertainty.

Wine stocks still high

National stocks remain 5.4% higher than expected in 2025, despite falling below 50 million hectoliters. Prosecco DOC alone represents over 10% of national stocks.

Wine tourism increasingly strategic

The book "Wine & Tourism" was presented to the Senate, highlighting how hospitality is becoming one of the most important assets for wineries' profitability.

Growing interest in moderate consumption

The new generation doesn't necessarily give up wine but alternates moments of consumption and abstinence, encouraging the development of non-alcoholic and low-alcohol options.

Innovation in the mountains

The Lagazuoi WIMA Award recognizes innovative projects, including climate-resistant grape varieties and new solutions for the sustainability of mountain areas.

Botrytis and sustainable defense

Technicians focus on preventing fungal infections in vineyards, especially after extreme events such as hailstorms and insect damage.

Vineyard machinery: exports on the rise

In 2025, Italian agricultural machinery exports will reach 1.27 billion euros (7.2%), driven mainly by European markets.

Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta: a new viticultural program is needed.

Agricultural organizations are calling for a strategic review of the sector to address the structural market crisis and plan for the next ten years.

Final Strategic Scenario

The most important news of the week is not a single piece of data but the convergence of three phenomena:

  1. Global market in transformation , with future growth concentrated in India, Africa and South America.
  2. Italian exports still under pressure , especially to the United States, but with the first signs of stabilization in March.
  3. Wine tourism, hospitality, and premiumization are becoming increasingly crucial to wineries' profitability.

For Italian wineries, the focus is no longer on increasing production, but on creating value through brand, territory, experience, and perceived quality.
