Italian wineries, Italian wine producers, and current wine news

The latest news from the world of wine: wineries, markets, innovation, sustainability, wine tourism, and events.

ITALIAN WINE AND OENOLOGY

Antinori and Gaja: Italian wine must communicate better

At VinoVip Cortina 2026, Piero Antinori, Angelo Gaja, Sandro Boscaini, and Fausto Maculan analyzed the future of the sector.

Antinori is proposing a major international campaign to highlight the cultural, social, and territorial value of wine, funded by a small contribution from producers. Gaja encourages a greater distinction between wine and spirits and a focus on women, young people, and new markets.

The message is clear: Italian wine still has a great future, but it must innovate, communicate better, and adapt to new consumers.

Italian wine: production and markets need to be rebalanced.

Stocks of wine and must have exceeded 53 million hectolitres , while domestic consumption and exports are slowing down.

Price pressure, especially for bulk wines, requires a greater balance between production and demand, market diversification, and the development of direct sales and wine tourism.

Grape prices are falling

The decrease in grape prices is penalizing many winemakers, while the final price of bottles is not showing proportional reductions.

The sector must ensure a more balanced distribution of value along the supply chain, protecting the income of agricultural producers.

Conegliano Valdobbiadene: Heat Slows Ripening

High temperatures and drought are slowing down the vegetative cycle of Glera grapes.

Harvest could begin around mid-September. Vineyard health is still positive, and production potential appears in line with expectations.

Olbia: Wine aged on the Tavolara seabed

Approximately 1,600 bottles were immersed 38 metres deep in the waters of Tavolara.

Temperature, darkness, pressure, and the movement of the sea create unique conditions for aging, combining winemaking innovation, territorial identity, and tourism promotion.

ITALIAN WINERIES

Zaccagnini Winery presents the 2025 Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo Chronicon.

The Chronicon line enhances the tradition of the Casauria Valley through Pecorino, Passerina, Montepulciano and Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo.

Cantina Zaccagnini today has approximately 260 hectares of vineyards and produces a total of approximately 6 million bottles .

Bellavista: Alma Assemblage recounts the evolution of Franciacorta

Francesca Moretti and Richard Geoffroy continue Bellavista's qualitative research.

Alma Assemblage was born from observation of the territory and climate change, with the aim of enhancing the diverse identities of Franciacorta.

Two Gold Medals for Cascina Castlèt

Cascina Castlèt won two Gold Medals at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles 2026 with:

• Passum Barbera d'Asti Superiore DOCG 2021;

• Policalpo Monferrato Rosso DOC 2022.

An important international recognition for Barbera and for the quality of Piedmontese winemaking.

Italian wineries awarded at Città del Vino 2026

Numerous awards were given to Italian companies during the Città del Vino International Wine Competition.

Among the awarded companies are Cantina Spinelli of Atessa, Azienda Agricola Iannibelli of Frascineto and Cantina Sociale Cooperativa of San Severo, winner of the Gold Medal with its DOP rosé “Castrum”.

INTERNATIONAL MARKETS AND NEW CONSUMPTION

Alcohol consumption likely to decline sharply by 2050

According to a study by Roland Berger, global consumption of alcoholic beverages could decrease by up to 50% between 2020 and 2050 .

Health, new generational habits, regulations, and demographic changes will favor the growth of low-alcohol, non-alcoholic products, and functional beverages.

Hugo Spritz: From Alto Adige to New York

The Hugo Spritz, a cocktail created in Alto Adige and made with elderflower, mint, and lime, is taking New York bars by storm.

The phenomenon confirms the international strength of the Italian aperitif culture and the growth of fresh and lower-alcohol drinks.

VinoVip Cortina 2026 brought together some of the key players in the Italian wine industry to discuss communication, young people, markets, climate change, and new consumption trends.

Grosjean Vins opens its Quart vineyards with tastings, walks through the rows, local products and live music.

Terre del Barolo remembers Gino Veronelli
