The Simon Wiesenthal Center has called for a boycott of the "wine of Hitler" produced by a company of Friuli that markets it with labels depicting Hitler and the fascist period.
In a statement, Marvin Hier and Abraham Cooper of the Wiesenthal Center wrote "Enough is enough". The owner of the Friulian company says they were created "as a joke ... we do not want to praise the fuhrer". "Firstly we protested for the launch of the 'Fuhrerwein' by the Italian company in 1995 - Marvin Hier and Abraham Cooper of the Wiesenthal Center explained in a statement which now is in The Times of Israel - now a more extensive series of wines that demeans, humiliates and mocks the victims of Hitler is being promoted on the website".
On the website of the company of Friuli there is written that the "Linea Storia" has "labels that recall the life of famous people of the political history of Italy and the world such as Che Guevara, Churchill, Francis Joseph, Gramsci, Hitler, Marx, Mussolini, Napoleon and Sissi". The company also adds that "today about half of the production of wine in the bottle is dedicated to the historical series that now has over 50 different labels, which have become cult objects among collectors".
The owner of the Friulian company responded via email that the launch of the series was made for "a joke, at the request of one of our customers, and now we sell a lot of bottles, but we never wanted to do politics or praise Hitler and his men". Moreover, many of its customers are Germans.
An explanation condemned by the Wiesenthal Center: "We reject the cynical idea of the owner of the company, stating that this wine is promoted as a 'joking gift' ... there can be only two types of people who buy this wine: people who identify with ideas of this kind, and young people who have not experienced the Second World War, this is why they think it is fun, a joke".
