Despite the reduction in quantity, identity and territory win

Red wines with a strong identity, whites with a complex aromatic profile, native vines increasingly faithful to the territory, international ones with a new and interesting profile. These are the wines we will drink from the 2023 harvest, one of the most complex, with a quantitative decline estimated in some areas of up to 40%. “ Despite the extreme climatic conditions and the attack of downy mildew, the winemakers speak of a challenging harvest which however did not compromise the quality of the harvest ” - comments Mariangela Cambria , president of Assovini Sicilia. The longest harvest in Italy - one hundred days of harvesting - began in the western part of the island in the first ten days of August, and ended at the end of October in the vineyards of Etna. “ A 2023 harvest whose results are not homogeneous from the point of view of the different Sicilian territories but which vary from producer to producer. It's difficult to generalise ” - comments Mattia Filippi of Uva Sapiens. “What we found is the interesting result of the Grillo grapes, a vine that performs in quantity reductions and which in this harvest revealed itself in wines with a broad aromatic spectrum and more pronounced tropical notes,” continues Filippi. “The big surprise was the wine produced from the Syrah vine, whose grapes have demonstrated resistance to weather and climate conditions and a result which, post-harvest, translated into wines with an acid-sugar balance and excellent maturation. The response of the Cerasuolo di Vittoria grapes and some vines from Etna and North East Sicily was interesting ” - concludes Mattia Filippi. “In extreme situations like these which characterized the recent harvest, the prevention approach adopted by many producers and the careful and careful management of the complex meteorological-climatic factors proved to be successful” - concludes the president of Assovini Sicilia, Mariangela Cambria . Assovini Sicilia is an association that brings together one hundred small, medium or large Sicilian wine companies, which mainly share three elements: total control of the wine supply chain, from the vineyard to the bottle; the production of quality bottled wine; the international vision of the market.
