According to Unione Italiana Vini, in 2012 the "Italian Vineyard" decreased to 655,000 hectares, loosing as many as 9,000 hectares. The soil losses are of greater importance are in Sicily (-4,000 hectares), Piedmont (-2,500), Emilia Romagna (-2,000), Sardinia (-1,700).
Only the Veneto region is distinguished by the acreage devoted to Prosecco.
The President of Uiv, Domenico Zonin, to solve the problem proposes: "Less bureaucracy: too many companies are discouraged from investing in vineyards by cumbersome and contradictory laws, and think about policies that can encourage young people to go back to vineyards".
