The International Astronomical Union accepted the nomination to name 6851 Chianti the 6851 (1981 RO1) asteroid, presented by the Multifunctional Observatory of Chianti.
To confirm the name there will be fifteen professional astronomers from around the world as members of the Committee on Small Body Nomenclature of the International Astronomical Union.
«If the world organization of astronomers – Emanuele Pace declares – the same one that has decided that Pluto can no longer be qualified as a planet, would accept the application for the name 6851 Chianti, it would be a source of pride recognized worldwide. Moreover, we are preparing to take part in another campaign launched by the IAU to name Chianti an exoplanet, a planet that is orbiting around other stars in the Universe».
