The best Norwegian sommelier? An Italian

  • 24/01/2014

Francesco Azzarone is the best sommelier in Norway: his story and his recommendations

Azzarone, 32 years old, from Puglia, for three years has been the Norwegian national champion sommelier. Now Francesco works as a Wine–consultant for Fondberg and is responsible for the portfolio of Italy, Austria and Australia.

In Norway, he is a well–known personality and says that Norwegians love very much Italian wine, especially red. «Italian wine is 45% of the market. Especially soft, structured red wines, such as Primitivo, Valpolicella Ripasso, Barbera from Piedmont, and then the classic Barolo, Barbaresco, Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico and Amarone».

«To our producers I recommend quality and competitive prices. There are opportunities to grow, the Norwegians like Italian taste, and there is still plenty of room for the wines of the South. My bet? To aim for the wines of Etna».
