Precision viticulture and tailoring work in the vineyard for a complex harvest season

The harvest has come to an end for the Piccini 1882 estates, a winemaking group owned by the Piccini family, which today represents one of the most dynamic and innovative companies in the entire Italian panorama. The company's intent is to bring together some of the most interesting wine excellences of the Peninsula, enhancing their identity and relationship with the territory. The resulting wines respect the grape variety, the terroir and the typical nature of their areas of origin. “ We have been winemakers for generations - declares Mario Piccini , President of the Piccini 1882 Group - at the basis of our work is respect for the different terroirs, for the vines and for the rhythms of nature. Exalting the expressiveness of the grapes and their connection with the land of origin allows us to create important wines, with a view to a philosophy shared by my entire family and my collaborators. Unfortunately, the current year has been complex and has presented us with multiple challenges. Phenomena of various types have brought us a surplus of commitment in the vineyard and, despite the picture that this harvest season gives us, we have worked tirelessly in the decidedly more difficult months in all the estates, from north to south". The last days of August opened the doors to the harvest, allowing us to draw, with data in hand, a more accurate assessment of the progress of the 2023 vintage . Certainly the data that appears most evident concerns the drop in production, the causes of which can be found, on the one hand, in the anomalous climatic context which led to the spread of Peronospora in June and, on the other, to the violent hailstorms in August which hit repeatedly the vineyards of the North and Central-South. Consequently, the Italian vineyard recorded a drop in production quantified at 43/44 million hl, compared to 49/50 million hl in a typical year. The progress of the harvest in the "Generazione Vigneti" estates "Generazione Vigneti" includes the estates owned by the family which together have over 200 hectares of organically managed vineyards. The reins of the project are in the hands of the fifth Piccini generation, made up of the Ginevra, Benedetta and Michelangelo brothers. The balance sheet of the 2023 harvest for Generazione Vigneti , net of an anomalous season due to meteorological phenomena and the resulting problems, confirms data that do not differ greatly from the trend of the harvests at a national level. The emphasis, however, falls above all on a fundamental aspect: the organic management of the vineyards , practiced in all the estates, which posed a further challenge compared to the already adverse conditions. In Tuscany, at Fattoria di Valiano , nestled in the hills of Castelnuovo Berardenga in the Chianti Classico, the quantitative losses have settled at around 25-30%; in the Montalcino area where Villa al Cortile has its vineyards, a point of reference for the production of Brunello, the trend was generally positive and the losses stood at around 10% as well as at Tenuta Moraia , whose vineyards extend in the Maremma, following the Tuscan coast of Grosseto.

Losses rise to 80% in the case of Regio Cantina (Basilicata), a Lucanian estate with 15 hectares of vineyards in the Aglianico del Vulture area. Finally, in Sicily, at Torre Mora , a volcanic estate located along the northern slope of Mount Etna, the most evident losses are found in the Randazzo area, while in Rovittello and Linguaglossa the incidence of Peronospora was lower.

ICCINI 1882 is the winemaking group of the Piccini family, based in Castellina in Chianti, in the heart of Chianti Classico. Piccini is one of the most dynamic realities of the Italian wine scene, appreciated throughout the world. A family history that began at the end of the 19th century and has now reached its fifth generation. The Piccini family boasts 5 estates, for over 200 hectares of vineyards from the Chianti Classico to the Maremma up to the volcanic territories of Vulture and Etna: Fattoria di Valiano in the Chianti Classico; Tenuta Moraia in Maremma; Villa al Cortile in Montalcino; Regio Cantina in Basilicata and Torre Mora in Sicily. In 2018 the Piccini family acquired the historic reality of Agricoltori del Chianti Geografico, a historical point of reference in Chianti. In 2022 the family landed in the Langhe with the acquisition of the historic rotten Porta Rossa. The estates are led by CEO Mario Piccini and his children Benedetta, Ginevra and Michelangelo who have contributed to building the international dimension of a company present today in over 80 countries.
