Pierpaolo Di Franco and Davide Fasolini of the i Dirupi winery have won Next in wine 2011.
This award for new talents of the Italian vineyard is dedicated to winemakers aged up to 35 who are able to look to the future with strong ties to tradition. The organizers are Simonit & Sirch - Grape Preparers and the Italian School of Vine Pruning in collaboration with the Italian Sommelier Association.
Here are the words of the president of the Jury, Attilio Scienza, who motivates the award to I Dirupi:
"We have awarded Pierpaolo Di Franco and Davide Fasolini for the synthesis between tradition and innovation that they have managed to apply in the daily practice of winemakers. (...) they have been able to introduce the innovations that research has produced in recent years, without forgetting the lesson of the past (...) . A viticulture lived with the spirit of humanism and not of profit as an end in itself. The value of their commitment can also be assessed in the recovery of small abandoned vineyards, in the preservation of the often centenary vine stocks, in the restoration of the terraced walls.
A crucial aspect of their work as young viticulture graduates is that they have managed to modify the traditional training system, simplifying the structure of the canopy and making it more manageable with less costs .
Their example has been a stimulus to other young people who have returned with enthusiasm to the cultivation of the vineyard and today represent the true hope of Valtellina viticulture ".
