Italy is the first country in terms of number of DOP (Protected Designation of Origin), Igp (Protected Geographical Indication) and Stg (Traditional Specialty Guaranteed) recognitions awarded by the European Union. To say it is Istat: in 2012 Italy had 248 quality products recognized as at 31 December 2012, nine more than in 2011.
The sectors with the highest number of awards are:
- fruit and vegetables and cereals (98 products),
-cheese (45),
- extra virgin olive oils (43)
- meat preparations (36).
