The most anticipated toast of the year is coming. How to choose the right Sparkling Wine?
Here are some things to consider.
A.
First thing to know: the methods for obtaining sparkling wine are two: the Charmat and Champenois or Classic.
The difference between the two is that with the Charmat method fermentation takes place in vats while with the Classic method it also takes place in the bottle for three years, so wine costs more.
B.
The sparkling wines DOC (controlled designation of origin) and DOCG (controlled designation of origin guaranteed), are produced in a specific geographical area and subject to specific disciplines.
In addition, the “quality sparkling wine” is more alcoholic than a simple sparkling wine.
C.
Brut and extra brut (dry and very dry), vintage brut (including vintage indication), sec, demi–sec, doux (dry, semi–dry, sweet), cremant (slightly sparkling), cuvee (from different grapes and/or from the first pressing) pas dosè or natural (without the addition of syrups), with natural fermentation (without the addition of gas).
