Gianni Moscardini breaks the rules of wine in Alta Maremma

The producer and agronomist consultant from Pisa has been studying the perfect combination of parcel, rootstock and clone for years, unhinging the traditional concept of distribution area

Gianni Moscardini bases his approach on work in the vineyard and on in-depth and continuous research into the relationship between soil, rootstock and variety , with the aim of reinterpreting the concept of distribution area and enhancing the identity of the parcel . The winery is based in Pomaia , a hamlet of Santa Luce (Pisa) in Alta Maremma. Its vineyards extend for 13.5 hectares above and along the sides of the plateau characterized by a unique terrain, the result of the sedimentation process resulting from the retreat of the waters towards the current borders which took place millions of years ago. In fact, there are three different compositions , ranging from limestone of a sedimentary nature and marine origin to stony and arid of magmatic-volcanic origin, up to areas with clays of a deep sea sedimentary nature. The three types never intersect , but follow one another according to distinct parallel bands, both on the surface and in depth, favoring a precise and effective parcelling of the vineyards. Gianni Moscardini has identified here the cardinal principle of his production, in addition to his personal expressive code: finding the perfect union between clone, rootstock and plot . In the early 2000s, in parallel with his career as an agronomist and consultant for various wine-producing realities, especially those in Tuscany, Gianni Moscardini acquired the family agricultural property - for over a hundred years dedicated to the cultivation of cereals and olive trees - with the desire to shape his own wine project. It converts it solely to a quality viticulture and in its vineyards there are various vines: first of all the native Tuscan ones, such as ciliegiolo, sangiovese and vermentino, alongside international varieties, such as merlot and cabernet franc. However, the choice to plant varieties typical of other Italian areas emerges for which Gianni Moscardini detects a particular affinity with the Pomaia terroir : Teroldego, Fiano and Verdicchio, thus undermining the traditional concept of area . “Wine is the language I have chosen to tell the singularity, power and refinement of this land – explains Gianni Moscardini – And precisely to increase the intrinsic and perceived value of the production, in the near future we will work on the density and concentration of the language, reducing the range and favoring the most representative wine proposals”. This approach is also applied to monovarietals: an example is Atteone , the symbolic wine of Gianni Moscardini, 100% cabernet franc from grapes harvested in the Campo San Giovanni and Riserva plots. Atteone ages for 10 months in French oak and for 8 in the bottle. Intense ruby red in colour, it reveals hints of tobacco, chocolate and ripe fruit on the nose. On the palate it stands out for its excellent structure, the pleasantness of sweet tannins, the fragrance and freshness of the primary scents which, combined with a good sapidity and persistence, presuppose a long evolutionary path.

Gianni Moscardini The winery was founded in 2008 in Pomaia, in the hamlet of Santa Luce (PI) in Alta Maremma, with headquarters in the historic family property, which has been dedicated to the cultivation of cereals and olives for over a hundred years. Gianni, an agronomist and consultant for various wineries, converts the crops to vineyards to produce quality wine. The company has 13.5 hectares of vineyards on five plots distributed above and along the sides of the Pomaia plateau. The area is characterized by three different types of soil – calcareous, stony and clayey – arranged in parallel bands that never intersect. The particular conformation favors a precise parcelling which is reflected in the Gianni Moscardini production, characterized by the search for the perfect combination of soil, rootstock and variety. The result is refined wines with an unmistakable personality, organized into three lines: Selezione , Monovarietals and the most prestigious Terroir , which includes the iconic wines of the company Artume and Atteone .
