A consultant in the area of Brunello, abusing trust, falsified the amount of production. He multiplied the volume of the actually produced wine, and the surplus wine was red liquid that was sold to other wineries as authentic.
The scam involves a falsification of the documents that attest the Designation of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin (DOCG). The deal is estimated one million euro. A producer has noticed the false papers prepared by the consultant and reported it to the Consortium for the Protection of Brunello. «The greatest fraud ever carried out in the food and wine industry», the Provincial Commander of the Fiamme Gialle of Siena, Luca Albertario, explained.
Minister Martina said: «However, the system worked and did not damage consumers».
