LEGITIMATE TO PRODUCE AND CLASSIFY GRILLO AND NERO D'AVOLA GRAPES EXCLUSIVELY AS DOC

The Council of State considered legitimate the changes to the specification of the IGT Terre Siciliane which prohibit the use on the label of the names of the Nero d'Avola and Grillo grapes in the IGT Terre Siciliane, allowing them exclusively only with the controlled designation of origin of one of the Docs of the Sicilian region.

The judgment of the Council of State (Third Section) was issued on November 2, 2020 and confirms the legitimacy of the 2017 choice.

The modification requested to the production specification of "Terre Siciliane" PGI wines, concerning the prohibition to use only the names of the vines, Grillo, Calabrese and synonyms (Nero d'Avola) on the label, is therefore fully legitimate as allowed by the internal law more restrictive pursuant to art. 31, paragraph 13, L. 238/2016 referred to.

The Consorzio di Tutela Vini Doc Sicilia takes note of the sentence of the Council of State - which reforms the previous ruling of the Lazio TAR of 6/11/2019 following an appeal presented in 2017 - and reaffirms its commitment to the enhancement of the wines obtained from the Nero d'Avola and Grillo vines.
