CONSORZIO BARBERA D'ASTI AND MONFERRATO WINES: FORECASTS FOR THE 2023 HARVEST

  • 09/08/2023

Excellent quality grapes but volumes slightly compromised by hail and water deficit: the start of the harvest is scheduled for the last ten days of August

The producers of the Barbera d'Asti and Vini del Monferrato Consortium expect a harvest whose quality of the grapes will be excellent from a qualitative and phytosanitary point of view. However, the volumes, compared to previous years, will suffer a decrease caused by the water shortage in the summer months.

“ Quantitatively, given the droughts and hail storms, a minimal reduction in the quantity of grapes is estimated. – says Vitaliano Maccario, President of the Consorzio Barbera d'Asti e Vini del Monferrato - The prospects for the harvest remain good, with an excellent state of the grapes also thanks to the rains in the months of May and June, which protected the vines from the following summer heat. Today we can say that with these temperatures, we will begin during the last week of August with the harvest of white berried grapes and then move on to the harvest of red grapes towards the middle of September. An excellent result that we can confirm also comes from the careful and correct approach of our companies from the point of view of phytosanitary treatments. A great job that has allowed us to block the onset of fungal diseases” .

The seasonal trend was unpredictable: in fact, spring was characterized by very little rain. The month of June, on the other hand, was defined by a cool climate interspersed with some rainy events which led to an initial risk of developing the disease. However, through proper management of phytoiatric treatments, the companies have managed to block the onset of the disease.

In the months of July and August the temperatures rose considerably and unfortunately, we were greatly affected by the scarcity of rainfall.

To this day the climate continues to be exceptionally warm. The harvest is expected to begin in the last ten days of August, starting with varieties such as Brachetto, Moscato and red bunches starting with the most exposed jugs. Given the drought levels, a 10% reduction is estimated compared to the 2022 harvest.
