Case Basse winery in Montalcino: very serious malicious act, production 2007-2012 destroyed

  • 05/12/2012

The Case Basse winery suffered an extremely serious malicious act: "on the night between Sunday 2 December and Monday 3 December, unknown persons broke through the defenses and entered our cellar in Case Basse; they did not steal even a bottle but with a vandal, malicious and delinquent act of extreme gravity for the whole territory, they opened the valves of 10 barrels of wine suitable to become Brunello di Montalcino of the 6 vintages 2007-2008-2009-2010-2011 -2012. The loss amounts to 62,600 liters of Brunello, with a very significant economic damage. A gesture that does not deserve any adjectives, so much gravity that it reverberates far beyond the borders of our company. The authorities will carry out their task, we trust, with the help of all those who want to collaborate. "
It is read in the press release issued by the Soldera family, owner of the winery.
The winery "was also insured against vandalism, but the damage is very large and difficult to cover in full" declared the son of the Mauro Soldera family.

It was a quick and targeted action. According to the Carabinieri, the vandals knew how to act: they entered the rooms by breaking down doors with anti-panic locks and bulletproof glass. they did not touch the stainless steel barrels of the Rosso di Montalcino and went straight to the barrels where the Brunello was, they opened the taps and let all the contents flow into the sewers. Investigations are examining all hypotheses. There was no further damage, nothing was broken or stolen. And so many unanswered questions remain in the town of Brunello.

Silvio Franceschelli, mayor of Montalcino commented on the vandalism: "Maximum solidarity for the infamous and cowardly act committed against the Case Basse estate (...) as regards the nature of the event, I would invite everyone to exercise the utmost caution in compliance with value and image of a territory like Montalcino in the world. (...) I have the utmost confidence in the judiciary and in the investigators who have always been a guarantee for our territory ". The president of the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino Fabrizio Bindocci also intervenes on the matter who, yesterday, contacted Gianfranco Soldera to express his closeness, condemn a gesture that affects all the producers of Brunello and the territory of Montalcino, showing the solidarity of all the 250 companies gathered in the Consortium which - explains Bindocci - "feel personally involved in such an unspeakable event".

The president of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium Fabrizio Bindocci wanted to express his closeness to Gianfranco Soldera "condemning a gesture that affects all the producers of Brunello and the territory of Montalcino and showing the solidarity of all the 250 companies gathered in the Consortium that feel personally involved in such an unspeakable event. The Montalcino business community, as its tradition, will not leave alone a company hit so hard and cowardly and will support it in the ways and times that his friend Soldera deems most appropriate ".

The solidarity of the regional councilor Salvadori - "I would like to express my solidarity and that of the Region to Gianfranco Soldera, the owner of the" Case Basse "estate in Montalcino (...). We are committed to supporting companies and enhancing our products, a gesture like this, especially in times of crisis like this, is truly unspeakable. We hope that the judiciary and the police will do justice as soon as possible and that companies can resume working in total serenity and safety. "

Let's go back to the company's press release to understand the strength of their reaction: "A gesture that does not deserve any adjectives, so much gravity that it reverberates far beyond the boundaries of our company. directed only to the future, because no intimidation can stop the work and love for this land and the products it is capable of giving birth ".
