Bigot index: awarded to vineyards that have exceeded 90 points

There are 70 vineyards with a score above 90 cents, almost double compared to 2021

The award ceremony of the vineyards that have exceeded 90 points according to the Bigot Index , the method of scientific evaluation of the qualitative potential of a vineyard conceived by the Friulian agronomist Giovanni Bigot and his Perleuve team, will be held on Sunday at Vinitaly . More than 70 vineyards have exceeded 90 cents this year , almost double compared to 2021, among 1215 considered, 481 more than the last edition. The result of twenty years of field research in Italy and internationally, the method is based on nine evaluation parameters : production, foliage, relationship between leaves and production, grape health, bunch type, water stress, vigour, biodiversity and microorganisms, age of the vineyard. Each parameter considered affects a precise characteristic of the wine. Despite the fact that the 2022 vintage recorded average temperatures above 35 °C for prolonged periods of time (a figure that has increased by 75% in Italy compared to the average of the last 10 years, causing serious water deficit problems in some areas of the peninsula), the Index has calculated a particularly significant healthiness of the vineyards, determining high quality potentials in various areas of Italy, known and less known. “The results obtained are the result of the commitment and methods implemented by the winemakers – comments Giovanni Bigot – Man, at the center of the vineyard, has the power to make the right decisions even when the climate is changing and the Bigot Index , used throughout the year, it is an effective guide tool for identifying the goal and following the best route to reach it. Only by monitoring the available data and through specific agronomic choices is it possible to obtain very high quality vineyards and wines. In fact, the tastings of the wines a few months after the harvest confirm the results in preview”. The highest score, of 94/100 , was obtained from the Inferno - Nebbiolo Cartello vineyard of the Aldo Rainoldi company, in Valtellina, thanks to the care of the foliage in balance with the production, absolute health and careful management of the soil also towards biodiversity. There are a total of 25 companies that register vineyards with scores above 90 cents. Among these, the most awarded is Ferruccio Sgubin , in the Collio, which has six vineyards with high quality potential .
