BETWEEN LAND AND SEA SICILIAN WHITE WINES FROM THE CUSUMAN SUMMER

  • 10/07/2020

When, in 2000, the brothers Alberto and Diego Cusumano began to explore Sicily in search of the most suitable terrains, they had in mind that it is the deep and indissoluble bond with the territory that defines the essence of the wine itself.

And on this island with many faces, where geography changes within a few kilometers, the Cusumano estates tell the extraordinary variety of this land, so much so that each is an "island on the island" with a distinct identity.

To confirm this, the whites Angimbè and Shamaris , two icon labels of Cusumano, both available in the new vintage, 2019 : perfect to accompany lunches and cool summer evenings, they tell two very different stories.

Angimbè was born in Tenuta Ficuzza , in Piana degli Albanesi (PA), on hills that exceed 700 meters above sea level. It owes its name to the wood that rises near the vineyards where Insolia and Chardonnay grow from which it is born. Angimbé means a place that has everything in it. And here there is really everything: there is the Mediterranean scrub to give character, the wind and the altitude to give freshness and elegant aromas to the grapes, there is Insolia which on these vineyards develops acidity, minerality and the refinement of a mountain white, with Chardonnay to give the right softness .

You have to move a few kilometers to reach the hills of Tenuta Montepietroso in Monreale (PA), where the sandy soil, the altitude (500 meters above sea level) and the Tramontana which often blows on the north side, bringing the coolness of the sea, create a special setting for Grillo, which here manages to bring out a natural freshness and flavor that increase its character, elegance and aging potential. Here Shamaris was born, a pure , different, complex and elegant Grillo . The name recalls the sea, that nearby sea that you breathe when the north wind blows.

Different, therefore, the colors chosen for their labels: those of the earth for Angimbè and those of the sea for Shamaris . But, in both cases, the material colors and the interweaving of dark and light backgrounds translate the shades and harmony that the vines give on the palate into color, while the textures of free lines in relief on the label reproduce exactly the rows of vineyards of the respective estates, enriching the sensorial journey of the taster. This is, in fact, the Cusumano Touching Experience that wants to underline, also through the sense of touch, the diversity and uniqueness of each of its individual products.

All Cusumano wines use the SOStain / VIVA "Sustainable Wine" certification . In fact, the common denominator of the diversity and uniqueness of Cusumano wines is the commitment to sustainable viticulture that stems from the sentiment and ethical obligation to protect resources, limiting their waste. A research that translates into actions compliant with the SOStain protocol , the sustainability program for Sicilian viticulture, sponsored by the Ministry of Agricultural and Forestry Policies and recognized by the Ministry of the Environment, Land and Sea, through the VIVA sustainability project

CUSUMANO. Founded by Alberto and Diego Cusumano in 2001 in Partinico where it is based, it produces elegant and identity wines in five estates: Ficuzza in Piana degli Albanesi in the province of Palermo, San Giacomo a Butera (Caltanissetta), Presti and Pegni on the hills of Monreale, Monte Stony in Monreale, San Carlo in Partinico (Palermo). In 2013 the Cusumano family created Alta Mora by enclosing the districts of Guardiola, Pietramarina, Verzella, Feudo di Mezzo and Solicchiata on Etna under a single new brand.
