In Verona, the Minister of the Environment Clini presented a pilot project to measure the impact of the Italian wine chain on the environment.
Those who adopt it will be able to boast a certification logo that promotes eco-sustainable wine to the consumer.
"Our viticulture has many peculiarities - said Minister Corrado Clini - Producers are custodians of the territory and of the landscape and this is the message we will try to convey when we present the Italian project for the sustainability of Italian viticulture at the Sustainable Development Forum of Rio de Janeiro in June ».
The general lines of the project were presented to operators during a conference at Vinitaly: the fundamental objective is to create a technology for calculating the environmental sustainability of the Italian wine supply chain starting from the calculation of the water & carbon footprint, i.e. the measurement of the impact that wine production has on the environment in terms of water use and greenhouse gas production.
The project has been working on since July 2011 and for now it involves: Gancia, Masi, Antinori, Tasca d'Almerita, Michele Chiarlo, Mastroberardino, Planeta, Venica & Venica and Monte Vibiano.
In the future the wineries that will use it will also be able to exploit it in terms of marketing by putting a logo that signals the consumer.
