A growing year ends for the Alta Langa DOCG

A YEAR OF GROWTH IS CLOSING FOR THE ALTA LANGA DENOMINATION: 40% OF SALES, 3 MILLION BOTTLES IN PRODUCTION SINCE THE LAST HARVEST

Another year of growth for the Alta Langa DOCG. From a commercial point of view, 2022 closes with a satisfactory 40% of sales compared to the previous year. The entry of 18 new members into the Consortium brings the number of members to 134, including manufacturers and winegrowers. Expected production is 3 million bottles since the last harvest : a result substantially in line with that of 2021, in which the slight drop due to the particular climatic conditions of the year was mitigated by the entry into production of new plants. From the point of view of promotion, a great response was obtained from the fourth edition of La Prima dell'Alta Langa : the annual tasting event of all the cuvées of the members of the Consortium. Last spring it was held in the Turin headquarters of Italdesign, an internationally renowned Piedmontese company which, since 1968, has been involved in the design, prototype and pre-series construction for brands from all over the world in the automotive and product design fields. 1200 accredited professional operators from all over Italy and abroad took part. To enhance the value of "Made in Piedmont" an iconic goblet , "Terra" was studied with Italdesign, which the Consortium uses in official events and is currently exhibited in the "DNA. The genes of the automobile in industrial design" exhibition in course at the Turin Automobile Museum. The "Terra" glass was the protagonist of the Alta Langa DOCG tastings within the Cooking Shows of the International Alba White Truffle Fair , where Italian and international chefs presented their truffle preparations paired with Alta Langa wines from member producers of the Consortium. Starred chefs, but not only: a project that the Consortium will follow up on in the coming months, is linked to a box set of books entitled "Alta Langa – Civiltà della Tavola e Genius Loci" , edited by Luciano Bertello, which encapsulates the essence of 14 restaurants, taverns and trattorias of the Alta Langa and, with it, the story of the landscapes, people, stories and flavors of these lands. The Consortium has promoted the creation of this publication with the precise intention of supporting the work of innkeepers and restaurateurs who, on the high hills of the Langa, represent a garrison of authentic traditions. In some of these kitchens the fires were lit as early as the 19th century; the younger ones have successfully crossed the finish line of half a century: proud, indefatigable heart of Piedmontese taste.

Together with the National Center for Truffle Studies, the pilot project to raise awareness among winegrowers is continuing to dedicate a portion of land to the planting of symbiotic trees of the white truffle : 150 plants have been planted among the vineyards of the Alta Langa, plus another 30 dedicated with black truffle.

2023 will bring a strong sign of confidence in the future of the denomination, which wants to grow and establish itself: in fact, there will be a reopening of the vineyard tender which will allow the registration of 220 new hectares in Alta Langa DOCG in the next three-year period 2023-2025 .

The president, Mariacristina Castelletta says: " Our denomination is unique and special, made up of ambitious people, farmers and producers of bubbles united together by a farsighted vision and great Piedmontese pride. We have come a long way in recent years. Only ten years ago there were 12 producers, now we are 55. Year after year we have grown in terms of sales with double-digit percentages. Now a new challenge begins: the next three years will be decisive for the future. The substantial opening up of the surfaces projects us, within 10 years, in a double dimension compared to the current one. We have a great future ahead of us and the possibility of an important growth that we will face all together, cohesively, maintaining the quality vocation that this wine has in its DNA ".
