Vitevis at Vinitaly: 5 100% Carbon Neutral wines

  • 28/03/2023

New stage in the path towards sustainability and carbon neutrality. During Vinitaly, the "Vitevis 100% Carbon Neutral" project will be presented on 5 DOCs in the Veneto region.

A path of sustainability that translates into shared guidelines and practices, capable of involving 1,350 members over an area of 2,800 hectares of vineyards in the most suitable areas of the Veneto region, between Verona, Vicenza and Venice.

This is the choice of Vitevis, an agricultural cooperative society born in 2015 from the union of three historic Vicenza wineries : Cantina Colli Vicentini in Montecchio Maggiore, Cantina di Gambellara and Cantina Valleogra in Malo and able to expand further in 2019 thanks to the acquisition of the Castelnuovo del Garda winery.

Conceiving sustainability as a journey, a journey is the key to facing new challenges and constantly improving. Vitevis's journey has ensured the involvement of many people, with teamwork exceptional results can be achieved.

These goals are achieved by sharing choices and practices with local partners and stakeholders, as Alberto Marchisio, general manager of Vitevis points out: “These choices have been shared by many people, this is a real satisfaction and a great value . Our journey demonstrates that with teamwork we can achieve results that we thought were unattainable. This fills us with pride."

A horizontal process that does not envisage a conclusive and decisive goal but embraces a set of aspects linked to the three main areas of sustainability: economic, social and environmental.

An evolution that responds to constant climate change, to consumer demands, to increasingly complex markets and that requires management skills from both an economic and technical point of view through a serious, concrete and documentable path.

With this in mind, more than half of the Vitevis vineyard area has obtained SQNPI certification, starting from 2017 the cooperative has managed to involve as many as 202 member companies for a total of 1,400 hectares.

Furthermore, in 2022 one of the 4 companies that make up Vitevis, the Cantina Colli Vicentini of Montecchio Maggiore, obtained the Equalitas standard, becoming part of the 70 Italian wineries that have obtained this important certification.

The theme of the conscious use of water to balance the water emergency is more topical than ever and at the center of attention. Vitevis is carrying out a project to understand how and when to use it in the most useful way possible, through forecasting technologies and models and studying the effective needs of plants at a given moment.

The data coming from the large-scale satellite images and from the weather huts placed on the territory are put in relation with the phenological period, the leaf and soil analyses: a set of data which allows to define when the use of water is really necessary.

The commitment to sustainability has guided many of Vitevis' choices and the adhesion to the “NoiCompensiAmo” project, launched by the start-up Agatheia, which involves 90 members and 700 hectares of vineyards, is part of this direction.

The project consists in quantifying, monitoring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions by increasing their removal. The carbon credits, certified by a third party in accordance with the UNI EN ISO 14064-2 and -3 standards and the ICIM 0451CS SCPE GHG scheme, derive from sustainable agronomic practices carried out by the Vitevis winegrowing members.

During the 55th edition of Vinitaly (April 2-5 2023) in Stand F4 in Hall 5, Vitevis will present the project and preview 5 products certified by the "100% Carbon Neutral" stamp.

"Vitevis sustainable coffee time" is the name chosen for the presentation event which will be held on Sunday 2 April from 9:30 to 9:45 , in the presence of the mayors of Gambellara, Castelnuovo del Garda, Malo and Montecchio and representatives of Consortia for the protection of Bardolino, Custoza, Tre Venezie Pinot Grigio, Prosecco and Durello.

An emblematic appointment in which the new line will be launched and the objectives, results and prospects of this program will be illustrated by key points , accompanied by a tasty Lavazza "Carbon Neutral" coffee.

As Carlo Petrini, founder of Slow Food , underlined during last October's event entitled “Good wines for the earth – the green path of Vitevis”: “The implementation of alternative energies, the reduction of CO2 emissions, the water saving, the reduction of pesticides and chemical products are good practices that Vitevis has implemented and are the essence of practical behaviours”.
