Climate change in the area of Prosecco Superiore DOCG

  • 11/02/2015

The annual cycle of seminars on viticulture organized by the municipality of San Pietro di Feletto (Treviso) will address the issue of climate change. The meetings, chaired by the students of the Wine School of Conegliano, came to the eleventh edition and will take place on 29th January and 4th, 12th and 18th February. Meetings will be held at the Aula Magna of the primary school in Rua di Feletto (Via della Libertà, school/sports center).

The climate is showing signs of an important change. Until a few years ago such meteorological behaviors could be considered vagaries of weather, now the size of the events and the rate of change seems to leave no doubt that they can become a permanent condition. As for the territory of Prosecco Superiore DOCG, the floods that have occurred in October/November 2010, St. Martin 2012, spring 2013 and the failure to summer 2014 (which actually had more characteristics of an extended spring) to complete with the great floods of November 2014, confirm these concerns.

These developments have had significant negative effects on viticulture and require information and serious and reliable addresses able to put farmers in a position to handle this challenge in a prepared way.

The meetings will be an opportunity to address, with the help of experts, in depth, these issues, analyzing the data of rainfall in general, at regional and local levels. Moreover, will be explained: the effects of extreme weather events on the ground, on plants and in particular on the lives and countermeasures, from pruning to canopy management with special attention to the development of the complex of "Mal dell’Esca". As to the extreme rainfall normally widespread landslides and mudslides follow, a study will be presented, conducted by the University of Pavia, in collaboration with the University of Piacenza, on the role of the roots of the vines planted on sloping vineyards that will highlight the the best steps to take to counter the hydrogeological unbalance.

As every year, we will give space to the students of the School of Enology in Conegliano to present the activities carried out in the farm of the School in collaboration with the Condifesa TV.

Together with the children, will be presented: the experiences lived by farmers and technicians who work in the vineyard of the appellation of Prosecco Superiore DOCG, that the from the points of view of geomorphology and weather–climate, has spent the last year with particular difficulties. The meeting program is designed not only for professionals, but also to a wide audience who want to understand more about major weather events on agriculture in general and viticulture in particular, whose consequences can affect the daily life of everyone.
