THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING CALLED... TURIN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE PROTECTION OF PGI, DOC, AND BRANDS CONTAINING GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES

MAY 26, 2026 / 10:00 am - 5:30 pm Scalo Vallino - University of Turin - Via Nizza, 40 – TURIN.

The Vermouth di Torino Consortium is highlighting a new, important initiative. Protecting Vermouth di Torino worldwide is not just a task entrusted to it by MASAF, but a mission the Consortium views as a promise to keep, protecting and defending the identity and excellence of Vermouth di Torino on the international stage.

Next Tuesday, May 26, 2026, the University of Turin will host a multidisciplinary international conference on the technical, regulatory, and marketing aspects of promoting, protecting, and safeguarding PGIs, PDOs, and registered trademarks containing geographical names in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

How is the quality of Italian PGIs certified on international markets? What strategies are available to protect their origin on the global market? What are the potential synergies between collective trademarks and Designations of Origin? What protection tools does the EU's accession to the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement offer? How can we protect our PGIs and PDOs in South America, India, Japan, Australia, and Vietnam? These are all countries with which the European Union has developed agreements, and where significant developments will occur in the coming months. These pressing questions will be answered by distinguished Italian and international specialists.

Given the importance of the event, the Consortium will collaborate with UGIVI (Union of Vine and Wine Jurists), the Turin Academy of Agriculture, CONVIVI (Interdepartmental Research Centre for Viticulture and Wine - University of Turin), the Turin Chamber of Commerce, and OICCE (Interprofessional Organization for the Communication of Knowledge in Oenology).

The conference will take the term "Turin" as its study example , the geographical name contained in the PGI "Vermouth di Torino" . This will serve as a starting point to highlight current best practices, existing international risks , and the possibilities for greater protection and valorization of Designations of Origin, Geographical Indications, and collective trademarks in the world of wines and aromatized wines that contain a geographical term.

Starting from the regulatory framework and substantive requirements as the basis for controls and protection, the course will analyze the tools and possible protection strategies, the role of Protection Consortia and Control Authorities, territorial development policies, and active surveillance strategies.

After greetings from the President of the Turin Vermouth Consortium, Bruno Malavasi, and the institutions collaborating in the conference, the introductory speech will be given by the Minister Plenipotentiary, Andrea Mazzella , (Director of the International Relations Office – Customs and Monopolies Agency), who will discuss “The role of ADM as a quality certifier of Italian PGIs for international markets.”

Speakers will include prominent Italian law firms, the Turin Laboratory - Customs and Monopolies Agency, the Turin Chamber of Commerce, and Turismo Torino.

Alongside these, there will be the opportunity to listen to the arguments of international experts from Australia, Brazil, Japan, India, Vietnam , who will illustrate the methods of protecting Italian PGI/PDO within the policies of different countries and international agreements.

The conference will be held at a symbolic location in Turin, next to the Porta Nuova railway station: the Scalo Merci Vallino , a structure built in the late 19th century that for over a century represented a strategic hub for the city's economic and industrial growth. Today, it is the focus of a major redevelopment plan involving the University of Turin, Faculty of Medicine.

The conference can be attended both in person and via video conference.

Participation is free, but prior registration is required for everyone.
