San Gimignano Nature and art. Our roots.

San Gimignano is said to have taken its first name, Silvia, from the forest that surrounded it, 'silva' for the Latins.

Today the countryside still envelops the village in the guise of a landscape softened by centuries of human action that has drawn vineyards, olive groves and cultivated fields there. The precious red Terra di Siena mixes with the green of the crops, the more intense and austere one of the cypresses and the yellow of the ocher, creating an ideal palette of colors from which the human genius has drawn to outline, in harmony with the landscape surrounding, the unmistakable turreted profile. Symbol of the centuries of splendor and prestige, earned thanks to the fortunate geographical position, the architectural heritage has remained almost intact to this day thanks to the ruin which San Gimignano faced starting from the mid-fourteenth century. The cyclical succession of famines and plagues drastically reduced the population, bringing the town to the level of the other numerous lands of the Florentine countryside, but in fact preserving it from the urban transformations that many Italian historic centers underwent after the Middle Ages. San Gimignano never recovered from the economic and demographic collapse and the stagnation of the following centuries crystallized its medieval image over time, creator of today's fortune and notoriety. A place of welcome since the time of the Via Francigena, in the 18th century San Gimignano was rediscovered by travelers on the "Grand Tour" and since then it has never ceased to host and fascinate its visitors. Far from being cradled in a time out of this world, the Tuscan village is committed to making modernity coexist with the ancient soul of its walls, maintaining a lifestyle on a human scale, protecting the centuries-old cultural heritage and opening up to artistic experiences contemporary.

The philosophy of Nous Art Gallery moves from the awareness that the human being is a small part of a larger ecosystem that precedes him. In this view, art is only partially a human product but rather the result of the synergy between man and natural elements. Each exhibition curated by Nous is born and is formed thanks to a selection of artists who make the four elements the substance of their research, interpreting their relationship with nature with different techniques and materials.
