On December 21, ONAV celebrates one of the figures who contributed most to writing modern oenology: Federico Martinotti , inventor of the refermentation method in autoclave with which sparkling wines such as Prosecco, Asti, Lambrusco and Brachetto are produced, today appreciated throughout the world.
" Martinotti: one hundred years of Italian sparkling wine " is the conference that will be held on Saturday 21 December at the ONAV headquarters in Piazza Santa Maria Nuova 5 (Asti) , starting at 9.15 am.
Federico Martinotti, originally from Villanova Monferrato, is the visionary scientist who, in 1895, revolutionized the production of sparkling wines with his innovative discovery of the autoclave refermentation method. This process, later patented by Charmat in 1907, made it possible to obtain sparkling wines while preserving the varietal notes of the grapes and significantly reducing production times, from years to just a few months, compared to the Classic Method, which was the only one used up until that time.
The meeting on December 21st will be an opportunity to learn more about the man, the scientist, but also the evolution of Italian winemaking from the beginning of the 20th century to today. Speakers at the conference include Giusi Mainardi , Editor-in-chief of the OICCE Times magazine, who will delve into the biography of the scientist Federico Martinotti, while Antonella Bosso , Director Technologist at CREA-VE, will present the studies and research of this courageous experimenter. Andrea Desana , President of the Casale Monferrato Capitale della DOC Committee, will illustrate the celebration projects organized for the occasion. OICCE Director Pierstefano Berta will outline a picture of Italian sparkling wine between the 19th and 20th centuries. Professor Enzo Cagnasso of the University of Turin will compare the Martinotti Method and the Classic Method, the two main styles of Italian sparkling wine. Diego Tomasi , Director of the Consortium for the Protection of Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG, will delve into the connection between Martinotti and the Glera grape variety. Finally, Stefano Ricagno , President of the Consortium for the Protection of Asti DOCG, will talk about the current situation and prospects of this ambassador of the Martinotti Method. The moderator will be Professor Vincenzo Gerbi , vice-president of the Italian Academy of Vine and Wine and president of the ONAV Scientific Council.
<first international organization to promote the culture of wine , with a constant commitment to the dissemination of scientific and technical knowledge. For this reason we decided to organize the conference dedicated to Federico Martinotti, retracing the stages that have marked the history of sparkling wine>>, says Vito Intini , president of ONAV Nazionale.
