Castiglione d'Orcia
The origin of the town of Castiglione d'Orcia dates back to 714 AD and is characterized by two urban structures that take the name of Castiglion d'Orcia and Rocca d'Orcia, two castles not far from each other. The urban center still has the austere appearance of a medieval warrior stronghold with narrow streets that rise between stone houses. Its elevated position, overlooking the immense surrounding territory, made it an excellent control post on the Via Cassia and then on the Francigena for the soldiers of the noble families who followed one another at the helm of the fortress such as the Albobrandeschi, Piccolomini, Salimbeni … Up to the Republic of Siena and finally to the Grand Duchy. Thus over time sieges and disputes continued to take possession of this strategic position. Of particular interest is the art room with authentic masterpieces: Madonna enthroned with the Child and Angels by Lorenzo di Pietro, known as il Vecchietta; the Madonna and Child by Pietro Lorenzetti and a Madonna and Child by Simone Martini. The Church of Santa Maria Maddalena and the Pieve dei Santi Stefano e Degna are very beautiful. The Municipality, in addition to the capital, includes other villages and a series of smaller agglomerations within a heterogeneous environment that goes from the rolling hills of the Val d'Orcia, cultivated with wheat, olive trees and vineyards, to the chestnut and beech woods dell'Amiata, where a series of unique and evocative landscape itineraries unfold. Within the municipal area, the Ripa castle, the Campiglia bell tower and the enormous wells of which Rocca d'Orcia is the largest in the Province of Siena should be remembered. The area is rich in springs of which the most important is Vivo d'Orcia which for decades has quenched the city of Siena. The main activities of the area are agriculture and tourism with particular reference to thermal tourism whose ancient warm waters form the wonderful white ditch of Bagni San Filippo.
The Orcia DOC wine
The Orcia appellation was born on February 14, 2000 and extends over a territory of 12 municipalities in southern Tuscany, on hills particularly suited for the production of long-aged red wines. The production area is located between those of Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and is among the most intact and beautiful wine territories in the world, largely inscribed in the Unesco World Heritage Site. The wines express the commitment and passion of the producers who still do everything directly today: from the cultivation of the vineyard to the sale of the bottles. Just over 300,000 bottles a year produced in about sixty wineries that proudly show a family product made by those who live in the midst of the vineyards, respecting nature and with excellent skills in enology and viticulture. The Orcia variety is obtained from red grapes with at least 60% Sangiovese and Orcia Sangiovese with at least 90% of this vine, both also in the “Riserva” type. The Bianco, Rosato and Vin Santo types are also included. Despite the small production size, the DOC Orcia is quickly and satisfactorily appreciated by experts in the wine world and by winelovers.
