In Friuli Venezia Giulia we find the three most famous denominations of white wines from the hills, which offer structured and minerals wines: Colli Orientali del Friuli, Collio and Carso. This latter is distinguished by the uniqueness of the soil, very calcareous, and the rigidity of the winds that affect its climate. The vines here used are Istrian Malvasia, Vitovska and Terrano.
Colli Orientali del Friuli and Collio, instead, represent the excellence of balance between body and salinity.
The grapes used here are different, mainly Friulano, Ribolla, Grey Pinot, Schioppettino, Refosco as local varieties, and the major international grapes. Going down to the sea, remarkable are also some wines of Isonzo, Grave, Annia. Aquileia and Latisana: less structured, but very pleasant.
In the vinegrowing industty of Friuli, the tragedies of two world wars are still a burden, which caused a movement of people and remarkable territorial variations. Moreover, one should consider that in this region came (and still come) the influences of the Veneto region, but also those of neighboring foreign countries, which have rooted strong traditions. In recent years, people are trying to trace a path of independence for the grape varieties and the wine from Friuli in order to be able to recognize the typically regional native varieties.
Friuli Venezia Giulia, with its white wines rich in scents and structure, is still the homeland for excellence of the great Italian wines. Areas such as Colli Orientali and Collio are perfect for the production of Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Pinot Grigio, Venrduzzo and Malvasia, without forgetting...
Friuli is considered the region of excellence for the production of white wines, but some local red wines such as Schioppettino, Raboso, Refosco, are able to resist within a very large production of international wines such as Cabernet, Pinot Nero, Merlot.
The vine varieties on which Friuli's denominations are based are employed also in the production of some prestigious sparkling wines, that can be vinified also in red. Moscato Giallo Sparkling, Grigio Friulano Sparkling and Ribolla Gialla Sparkling are some of the sparkling wines of the region...
The grapes of Verduzzo and Picolit are the real protagonists of the regional dessert wines. Picolit is produced in very small quantities, is unique in Italy and for this enhances the name of Friuli. Very renowed raisin wines are also Ramandolo and Verduzzo.
