A wine is defined hard if it is disharmonious because of an excess of tannic and acidic substances. This is not necessarily a defect, but rather an indication that wine needs to stay longer in the bottle to let the tannins soften. The term is normally used for young red wines, but can be also a positive feature of dry white wines.
