In the wine language, a designation is the area or the region where the grapes of a particular wine were grown. In the United States the official definition for a designation is American Viticultural Area or AVA, while the French version is Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée or AOC and that Italian one is Denominazione d’Origine Controllata or DOC.
