Clos

A French word designating a "vineyard surrounded by walls". The term is commonly incorporated in the names of many vineyards in France, as well as in some wineries of the United States. Especially in Burgundy, the name may be used only if a vineyard is (or was) surrounded by stone walls. These "clos" were carefully divided by Cistercian and Benedictine monks, on the basis of small differences of soil and growing conditions. Among the best known clos we include "Clos de la Roche", "Clos de Tart", and "Clos de Vougeot".
