The Vermouth Consortium of Turin draws up the 2020 year-end balance with important initiatives to come in 2021.

The Turin Vermouth Consortium focused in 2020 on the internal structuring and regulations necessary for its functioning as well as the promotion and protection of the “Vermouth di Torino” Geographical Indication where made possible by the different market situations. While suffering from the almost complete closure in the world of its most natural outlet channel such as that of Horeca, and of cocktail bars in particular, shelf sales and e-commerce have partly tempered the decrease in sales due to the pandemic.

2021 will be an important year that will mark the thirtieth anniversary of the creation of the Geographical Indication, in fact it was June 14, 1991 the historical date of publication of the Regulation that of the official recognition of "Vermouth di Torino" as a geographical denomination protected by the European Union, but in the meantime, here is a chronology of the activities of the closing year.

A 2020 IN A NUTSHELL

January

  • The overall volumes of 2019 were well up at the beginning of the year compared to the previous year, confirming the general positive trend of Vermouth di Torino which, with 20% on 2018, created the expectations of a great vintage.

At the end of January 2021, definitive data will be available to assess the weight of the pandemic in 2020 as a whole.

February

  • The European Official Gazette publishes Regulation 2020/108 which establishes that «Vermouth di Torino» / «Vermouth di Torino» is a Geographical Indication and which allows the EU logo of "protected geographical indications" to be used on the labels of Vermouth di Torino;
  • The Turin Vermouth Production Regulations are officially published on the eAmbrosia portal of the European Union ;
  • EAT PARADE broadcasts the RAI report by Fabrizio Salce which presents the history and production of Vermouth di Torino.

March

  • In its task of defending the Geographical Indication, the Consortium effectively begins to oppose the use of the abusive name in labels distributed in Europe and the USA.

May

  • The Board of Directors approves the consortium regulations.

June

  • The Director of the Consortium is appointed in the person of Dr. Pierstefano Berta.

September

  • The Consortium conducted the first analysis on the export of Turin Vermouth. The Consortium members export globally to 82 countries. (map attached);
  • Seminars and tastings with Fulvio Piccinino and Nicola Mancinone at Palazzo Ottolenghi on the occasion of the Douja D'Or in collaboration with the Industrial Union of Asti.

October

  • Vermouth di Torino is present at Terra Madre initiatives - Salone del Gusto and presents the clip "As it becomes Vermouth";
  • Vermouth di Torino is the protagonist at the Alba Truffle Fair .

November

  • The Consorzio del Vermouth di Torino has acquired a renewed brand , which can only be used by the Members;
  • The EUIPO, the European Union Intellectual Property Office, has included the Vermouth di Torino in its portal. In addition to the countries of the European Union, there are already 14 non-European countries that have recognized the Geographical Indication.

December

  • The "Grande Libro del Vermouth di Torino" (by Giusi Mainardi and Pierstefano Berta) received the OIV 2020 Award in the category "Monographs and specialized studies";

The path now leads to new programs for the promotion and protection of “Vermouth di Torino” IG in a collective effort of historical and new producers who are working on an important program for the next few years.

The flavored wine born in the shadow of the Mole and known throughout the world, has seen an evolution of production techniques, diffusion and consumption in the last three centuries and the rediscovery of these last years is demonstrating its youth and continuing its 'evolution.

It's always time for Vermouth di Torino.
