Wine, art and experiences for everyone: the summer proposals of Monte del Frà

Appointments suitable for adults and children but also for four-legged friends are on the calendar. The Art-Winery exhibitions also continue until October.

In Monte del Frà, the historic Custoza Doc company, among the many proposals for the summer, the initiatives stand out, also dedicated to the little ones and their families, in the name of wine and art.

To celebrate this union, the Sommacampagna winery, in a strategic position between Lake Garda and the city of Verona, is offering an interactive Wine and Art Tasting starting in June . The tour accompanies visitors to discover numerous works by national and international artists, inserted in the company's spaces thanks to the Art-Winery project created in collaboration with 6499 Milano – Hub of Art and Design. This is followed by a moment of interactive play where three representative wines of Monte del Frà are tasted and paired with the exhibited works according to the sensitivity of the visitors. For minors there is an alternative with a soft drink.
This most dynamic and original experience among the wine tourism activities of Monte del Frà was born from the passion of Silvia Bonomo , reception manager of the cellar and third generation of the family, who loves to merge the fields of wine and art, her great passions: "This proposal has the ability to impress exciting and positive memories through an unexpected and fun tasting. We recommend it to those who want to live a unique experience among artists on the international scene and glasses of local wine. We also pay particular attention to families with children , who can deal with the exhibited works expressing their impressions and sensations thanks to colours, sheets and blackboards, while their parents taste the most representative wines of our history. The next appointments of Art-Winery , always by reservation , will continue until 15 June with the exhibition of the works of Sabrina Ferrari , a Veronese artist dedicated to the creation of bronze sculptures with a tactile and evanescent charm, also characterized by a constant and exhibited vitality . From 23 June to 23 July, the works of Meriem Delacroix will be welcomed in the barrel room. Since the age of 26, she has dedicated herself to abstract painting, an expressive tool of synaesthesia, showing how to hear images, smell colors or touch perfumes. From 15 September to 15 October the protagonist will be Claudio Rolfi , an artist who depicts both views and peripheral areas of cities, bridges, rivers and industrial structures, with a personal and engaging synthetic realism.

Disease resistant vines: research by the University of Udine

The University of Udine has been working for 15 years with the aim of obtaining new varieties of wine grapes resistant to diseases and to reduce the use of pesticides in viticulture. Genomics allows to scientifically determine the characteristics of vineyards. Viticulture and enology use genomics a lot, which is a particular branch of molecular biology that deals with the study of genome and uses DNA sequencing or cloning of the genes. The selection project was founded in 1998 by the University of Udine in collaboration with the Institute of Applied Genomics (IGA) of Udine to respond to the critical situation of viticulture in Europe that is responsible for the use by as much as 65% of the fungicides used in agriculture (62 thousand tons of pesticides used per year - Eurostat 2007). The Friuli Venezia Giulia region has offered an initial contribution to start a program of crossing and selection in order to obtain new varieties of wine grapes resistant to disease and to avoid using pesticides. Over the years, the project was supported also by the Department of Agriculture. The crossings were carried out at the "Antonio Servadei" university farm of Udine, where today there are approximately 16,000 intersections in evaluation. The aim was to obtain a more and more effective response against diseases of the vine and an increasingly important qualitative characterization in view of the spreading of new clones. The result of these studies are the first varieties of grapevine produced in Italy resistant to disease. These varieties make it possible to reduce significantly the costs of viticulture thanks to savings in fungicide treatments in sight of a European patent, of multiplication and inclusion in the national registry of the Ministry of Agriculture. "The result obtained today - Raffaele Testolin, leader of the research team, remarks - is important and of great interest to producers. These are the first vine varieties resistant to diseases produced in Italy. Other countries have been working on similar projects for over a hundred years and some have obtained interesting varieties. However, the varieties already obtained have all a short cycle, mature too early and are only suitable to cooler climates of continental Europe". Growers will be able to cut production costs significantly lowering interventions for the protection of vineyards. It is enough to say that only "this spring - Enrico Peterlunger exemplifies - in Friuli 820 mm of rain between January and May have fallen, concentrated in the last two months. Growers have already done 6-7 treatments against fungal diseases". With the close collaboration of the Nurseries Cooperative of Rauscedo, the University of Udine has set up three plants with new experimental varieties in Grado, in the Chianti area and the Slovenian Collio region. "Other experimental plants - Gabriele Di Gaspero, current head of the project, announces - are scheduled this year in Italy and abroad. The same French wine growers have shown interest and will do an experimental plant". "In 2013 - the head of the search services of the University, Sandra Salvador, says - a European and international patent sponsors the new selections. UniUD also is preparing the sale of rights to multiply and is preparing dossiers for the inclusion of the new varieties in the national register at the Ministry of Agriculture".

"Dining with Stars of the Northeast" the Trilogy of taste starts

To open the program of the Trilogy of Taste in the evenings of 25th, 26th and 27th June, dedicated to the great kitchen in Ancient Trattoria Ballotta, an historian venue in Italy at the foot of the Euganean Hills, in Torreglia, there will be "Dining with the Stars of the Northeast". A charity event that year after year has brought together the starred and extrastarred chefs of the Veneto, Trentino and Friuli regions, as a gesture of solidarity towards an unfortunate food and wine journalist who can no longer use his pen as in the past, in which he reviewed almost all the cooks in the Northeast. Some of them, now starred and also famous for his merit, for an evening, get together and cook for free in his name. To enjoy the parade of stars and supercooks, the increasingly large audience that year after year do not miss the appointment with the excellences of the Northeast cuisine. Supported by equally generous and noble protagonists of the oenogastronomic world like prestigious wineries, brewers, butchers, masters of cheese, chocolate, and producers of mouth–watering sweet. For the following evening, June 26th, another triumph of gastronomy in the court of Antica Trattoria Ballotta, that for the trilogy of Taste is transformed into a large kitchen and in a large room with dozens of staff positions for chefs and the public, hosting, for the second event, the Vergani Ballotta Kitchen Grand Prix. A dinner prepared by about a dozen chefs representing the best restaurants in the Veneto region, coming from seven provinces, and who will compete for the coveted prize of the Italian Academy of Kitchen–Euganean delegation, after being promoted by the judgment of the technicians and having faced that of the audience, which becomes the people’s jury. Of the people wants to be also the third evening of June 27th: At Full Fish. A dinner based on unusual fish dishes for the culinary tradition of this part of the hills of the Veneto region that, however, will have at its side the fresh fish from the not distant fishing town provided by Cam of Chioggia. A town immortalized by Goldoni’s "Brawling in Chioggia", that for the occasion will be staged in its salient parts, with the TeatroNovo company. That will bring the popular and commoner atmosphere of Goldoni, playwright and lover of good fish, to the court of Ballotta. The 90 years of CRA–VIT: the conference on the future Genetic Passport of native grape varieties

At the conference “90 years of life of ISV/CRA–VIT of Conegliano (1923-2013)” the point in question was Italian viticulture and its prospects, and particularly the “Enhancement of the main Italian native grape varieties and their terroir”. Italian viticulture: prospects and intentions The conference “90 years of life of ISV/CRA–VIT of Conegliano (1923-2013)” was an important opportunity to take stock of the evolution of scientific research in viticulture and its prospects: ampelography, genetic improvement, pest management and study of wine–territory bond. “Italian viticulture – Giuseppe Alonzo, president of the Council for Research and Experimentation in Agriculture, said – has made enormous progress over the last century in economic, environmental and social terms, winning in the market thanks to those unique factors that make it part of our cultural and historical identity: from the remarkable diversity of soil and climate, to the incomparable varietal richness, to the savoir faire refined over time. Looking ahead, however, it must continue to be successful, focusing even more on excellence and exports”. On the occasion, Domenico Zonin, president of Unione Italiana Vini (UIV), has placed an emphasis on research: “Our organization is motivated to coordinate with institutions, primarily with national research centers of excellence and the CRA, to define the important and urgent needs of wineries and find solutions in the field of applied research in viticulture and oenology. UIV has the aim, consistently with its role as coordinator and collector of various actors who can actively boost research in such an important field as the one of wine”. From saying to doing: the Genetic Passport for the “Enhancement of the main Italian native grape varieties and their terroir”. The conference was an occasion to present the results of the research project “Enhancement of the main Italian native grape varieties and their terroir (Vineyard)”, funded by Mipaaf and coordinated by CRA–VITof Conegliano in collaboration with the Research Centre for Genomics and the Post-Genomics (CRA–GPG), the Institute for applied Genomics (IGA) of Udine, the University of Udine, Verona and Milan and the S.Anna High School of Studies of Pisa. This initiative aims to draw up a true genetic passport of the main Italian native grape varieties. “From our analysis – the researchers say –the high diversity of Italian grape varieties and, consequently, the great variability of wines that can be produced, are confirmed. It is one of the determining factors for the commercial success of our wines, especially abroad. And this is the first step to defend and promote the unique wine heritage of the country”. Other interesting applications of the project on indigenous grape varieties are: – To know the detailed composition of the grapes at harvest, in order to optimize the wine making technique, enhancing as much as possible the organoleptic characteristics of the different varieties. This will bring to a better quality and to a more distinct connotation. – To know the gene expression also in the major phases of development of the plant, to allow to better manage the cultivation techniques, in relation to environmental variables. – To understand the degree of adaptation to the vineyards to the various terroir, in order to optimize their qualitative expression in different environments.

The best Italian grappas: the Golden Alembic 2013

Out of 98 participating samples, thirty-eight are the grappas awarded with the Golden Alembic 2013. The 2013 edition of the competition organized by ANAG (National Association of tasters of grappa and spirits) saw the challenge of grappas by 35 companies. The competition Golden Alembic 2013 took place in Asti last June with the participation of 35 companies and the presentation of 98 products. 42 are the Anag tasters from all over Italy to evaluate and assign scores to anonymous samples. The best grappas in Italy 2013: the most awarded distilleries Elio Beccaris, Marzadro and Villa de Varda are the three distilleries that have achieved excellent results being rewarded with the Golden Alembic and three labels, each of them awarded: -Marzadro for Giare di Gewurztraminer, Diciotto Lune and Marzadro -Elio Beccaris for Camomilla and Grappa, Nebbiolo da Barolo Riserva 36 Months and Grappa Riserva Anniversario -Villa de Varda for Pi
