The alarmed Consortia of suits try to implement the instruments provided for by the law.

Concern in Veneto, Puglia and Sicily for stocks of 56.5 million hectoliters, about 5.3% more than in 2022, especially of PDO and IGT wines (about 80% of the total).

This scenario actually characterizes other regions as well, such as Abruzzo, Tuscany, Lombardy, Lazio, Campania. The main responsibility is given to an inflation of 8% in Italy which would induce consumers to reduce their purchases of wine in favor of pasta and meat.

In particular, the growth of one of the most famous Veneto wines, Prosecco, tends to zero, but it is hoped to be able to manage inventories by not deviating much from the level of 2022.

There seem to be two solutions to this crisis: resorting to art. 39 of the Consolidated text on wine with yield cuts, harvest reserves and freezing of planting rights, or make use of the so-called emergency distillation, i.e. the transformation of wine into alcohol and disinfectants.

The first option, already chosen by some regions, is certainly penalizing, while the second, although more comfortable, is not convincing due to the risk that the low withdrawal price of the wine will also drag future market prices down.
