The well famous wine of Piedmont adds indications on the label, already from 2014 there will be 170 geographical indications. The aim is to strengthen the territorial identity even abroad, and to provide better communication of territorial identity and defeat forgery.

Starting from 2014 Barolo will present itself with 170 geographical indications on the label, in addition to the eleven municipal indications, required by companies for a percentage around 80%.

Barolo DOCG of Piedmont is produced in 1,977 hectares and is addressed, for the major part (78%), abroad. The Consortium for the Protection, chaired by Pietro Ratti, is working on the launch of the new geographical indications. A special promotional campaign, dedicated to enhancing the 2010 vintage, is scheduled, and the director of the Consortium Andrea Ferrero stated: «We were the first in Italy to create them and it is right that they are communicated in the best way, especially abroad».

The market of 2013 closed with balance. «It is a profitable result for our companies and we must try to keep it stable». 2015 could be a complex year, as the 2011 vintage experienced an increase in production. The Consortium is not afraid of any change, and is convinced that the market will absorb this increase in production also thanks to the fact that «(...) even the smaller companies have been able to access OCM funds for the promotion in foreign countries, which will be the main end market», Ferrero said.

The additional challenge that the Consortium is facing is counterfeiting: the do–it–yourself kits of Barolo, that were withdrawn from the market, have recently returned to the market in England after having been dubbed “wine kit Barolla”.
