There are over 40 vines represented at the event and they all promote the different corners of Piedmont together, combining widely spread varieties (such as Nebbiolo, for example) with rare varieties, which have been recovered in recent years (such as Baratuciat, Bian Ver or l'Uvalino to name a few).
The wineries participating in the event, among those present at the tasting table or through samples in the thematic wine shops, are over 60. A tribute to Piedmont, a region which, in the Italian panorama, is perhaps among those with the most important number of vines native crops cultivated and represented, with excellent results.
“ The man of the vines: looks at Giuseppe di Rovasenda ” is the docufilm made on the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of Giuseppe di Rovasenda (Verzuolo 1824-1913), internationally renowned ampelographer and author, among other things, of the Essay on universal ampelography . The film retraces some aspects of the life of the famous ampelographer and also represents an opportunity to capture evocative glimpses of the town of Verzuolo and the Terre del Monviso.
The occasion of the event " Wine Festival, the native vines of Piedmont " scheduled for Sunday 26 May from 3pm to 8pm in Alba , thus becomes a favorable opportunity to screen the film in Alba. A tribute to Di Rovasenda and an event that enriches the day of May 26th with the screening of the film open to the public , in the new Sala Beppe Fenoglio in two time slots at 4.30pm and 6.00pm (free participation upon reservation).
Local directors, screenwriters and actors worked on the documentary film. In particular, the screenplay was entrusted to Corrado Vallerotti, author for theater and cinema, while the direction is by Costantino Sarnelli, already author of numerous films. The original music, composed for the occasion by Daniele Trucco based on the indications of the script, was performed by the musicians of Objective Orchestra who are training at the APM School Foundation in Saluzzo.
Giuseppe di Rovasenda dei Conti di Melle was born in Verzuolo on 4 June 1824 and came from a noble and ancient Piedmontese family. At the age of sixteen he undertook legal studies and then embarked on a diplomatic career. Soon, however, he abandoned this activity to dedicate himself completely to agriculture, developing a profound interest in viticulture, starting his studies in 1860 in Sciolze (To) at an uncle's villa, and then continuing and deepening them in Verzuolo in the properties of the mother. His studies were literally conducted "in the field" in the sense that, year after year, he began cultivating all the Piedmont vines, progressively adding those from the rest of Italy and later also the varieties grown in France, Germany and Spain . Thanks to Di Rovasenda's studies, the number of varieties of vines known and cultivated rose in 1877 to 3350 and, a few years later, even to 3666. He collected accurate and meticulous observations of each plant, recording them in various files which were then published with the title Essay on National Ampelography , which was immediately followed by the Essay on Universal Ampelography , also translated into French. Before his death he donated the entire collection of studies to the Royal School of Viticulture and Enology of Alba . |
The Wine Festival - The native vines of Piedmont will then be enriched, as in every edition, with some collateral events:
- tasting table dedicated to Verdicchio , the guest grape variety and wine of the 2024 edition (Cortile della Maddalena);
- tasting table dedicated to wines from the New World with South Africa as the protagonist (Cortile della Maddalena);
- guided tasting curated by Professor Vincenzo Gerbi , who will present 6 wines from as many native and rare vines of Piedmont (sensory room of the new Truffle Museum).
An extraordinary opportunity to get to know new and different products, to savor the charm of the typical products that characterize Piedmontese viticulture and which will converge, for one day, in the historic center of Alba.
“The event – say the Go Wine association – reaches its sixth edition; is part of the initiatives that Go Wine has been carrying out for many years in Italy in favor of native vines: it was born in Piedmont to talk about the particular richness of the region's vineyard and reinforces a theme dear to the association. In fact, every year Go Wine promotes a tour dedicated to native wines in six large Italian cities and promotes local wines as a tool to strengthen wine tourism in Italy; the Alba event reinforces this commitment of the association always in the name of general occasions that promote wine culture and knowledge".
The Festival of Native Wines of Piedmont takes place under the patronage of the City of Alba and with the support of the Cassa di Risparmio di Cuneo Foundation.
