Sangiovese grapes are the basis for many wines appreciated by connoisseurs worldwide. Now the Sangiovese di Romagna Foundation will deal with the promotion of wines from this grape variety in the world.

The grapes of Sangiovese are not well known in the world «but we are talking about a wine with peaks of excellence and high quality, with a brand known even if not in an appropriate manner», Enrico Santini, founder of Compagnia del Beato Enrico, said. He himself is one of the historic characters of Romagna’s agricultural world, who created the Sangiovese di Romagna Foundation to unite as many producers as possible.

His inspiration came from Giordano Emendatori, a businessman who had success with ice cream and now has decided to open Tenuta Biodinamica Mara in San Clemente di Rimini «Emendatori is a character who is not born in the world of wine, he comes from the outside and has a story that projects him in a vision of the global market, exactly what Sangiovese needs (...) overcoming the local parochialism to communicate a culture like that of Romagna which makes wine with Sangiovese»

Why the Sangiovese di Romagna Foundation?

«It is a project aimed at the promotion and sale of Sangiovese di Romagna in the world», Santini explains. «We are interested to invest primarily on exports, to do so we decided to create a Foundation animated by the desire to make known our wine abroad and market it in an innovative way». Santini continues: «With this variety in Romagna we are sitting on a gold mine», Santini continues, «but we have not been able to exploit it to the fullest. This is why we thought of an initiative based on innovation and communication, to meet the challenges of globalization with the identity of our history».

Who joined?

The new Foundation was launched in December 2014 in Forlì and can already count on the membership of many wineries, from Faenza to the hills of Valconca. Among the vinegrowers involved, in addition to Santini, there are also young Gianmaria Emendatori (Tenuta Biodinamica Mara), Massimo Lorenzi (Ennio Ottaviani winery), Massimiliano Fabbri (Trerè winery), Roberto Mascarin (San Valentino wines).
