Vespolina

The origins of this grape variety, also called Ughetta, are rather nebulous, although there are proofs of its presence in the province of Novara already in the eighteenth century. The etymology of the name Vespolina apparently derives from the fact that, when fully ripened, the grape becomes so sweet that attracts clouds of wasps. Currently it is grown in the province of Novara, Biella and in the high Vercelli area. This vine is also vinified in single-variety, but is more commonly blended with Uva Rara, Croatina, Barbera or Nebbiolo.
