Brachetto d'Acqui

It is an aromatic variety, probably originating from the hills of Asti and Monferrato, which is also called Borgogna in the area of Canelli. As already for the Barbera grape, even for Brachetto the presence in Roman times seems to be documented, when it is talked about a vinum acquense, sweet and aromatic, of proven aphrodisiac powers (a legend tells that Cleopatra used this wine to tangle up Giulio Caesar). However, to have certain historical attestation we must wait for the Treaty on varieties drawn up by the Earl of Rovasenda in the second half of the nineteenth century, when the Brachetto wine was very fashionable. Changing tastes, the vine even risked the extinction, but fortunately in the last two decades of the twentieth century a new interest in this grape variety arouse.
