Albanello

A vine of unknown origin, morphologically similar to the Greek White and probably related to the White Albaranzeuli of Sardinia and with the Elbling of the Moselle. It was widely cited in the course of 1700, and is part of the historical variety of the southern horn of Sicily, and especially of the province of Syracuse. At the beginning of the twentieth century the cultivation dell'Albanello began to be reduced and, at present, it could even risk the extinction if it were not for a small group of producers who continue to cultivate it and vinify it blended with other species. It is a plant with medium-large leaves, medium, cylindrical-conical and slightly sparse bunches, medium-sized, spherical or ovoid grapes, with thick and consistent skin.
