WHICH AGRICULTURE TOMORROW? HERE IN VENETO 600 HECTARES OF OPEN SKY LABORATORY ...

Innovation is needed, and new "flexible conservation agriculture" techniques are being tested in the experimental farms of Veneto Agriculture. At the center the conservation and the increase of the organic substance of the soils. Problems and solutions.

Stopping the continuous loss of carbon in soils through new techniques that allow them to progressively raise their levels: it is one of the crucial challenges for improving the future prospects of the quality of our life. It is therefore essential to bring back the carbon dioxide present in the air by blocking it in the ground, to ensure sustainable food production and counteract the greenhouse effect .

In this "global battle" it is also engaged Veneto Agriculture that in recent years has launched in its experimental farms of the plain one of the most significant projects ever undertaken on the full scale of 'conservation agriculture effects, which provides among other things or not minimum tillage of the soil, to preserve it and increase its organic substance content.

The application of this technique has however highlighted some problems such as, for example, the contraction of yields, the difficult control of weeds and the increase in soil compaction.

To avoid or reduce the problems and enhance the positive effects of this practice, Veneto Agriculture has identified flexible conservation agriculture as the solution, which provides for the application of the principles of traditional conservation agriculture (non-inversion of the layers, continuous coverage, rotation of crops) in a flexible way: for example through the non-tillage or minimal tillage of the soil depending on the agronomic conditions and the crop and the frequent use of the decompactor, as well as the application of precision agriculture.

The comparison experiment between this new agriculture and the conventional one based on plowing, which involves the entire arable land of the Veneto Agriculture farms (over 600 hectares ), therefore intends to provide useful answers on how to face our future.

Crops, land, machines can always be visited by operators thanks to the " Open company - open protocols " initiative.
