There is one wine that more than any other expresses the production philosophy of Vigna Traverso and the profound connection with the Prepotto area: it is the Schioppettino di Prepotto , an authentic interpretation of one of the most representative native grape varieties of the Colli Orientali del Friuli and today the flagship of the family winery.
Produced exclusively from grapes grown in the company vineyards located in the municipality of Prepotto, on soils characterised by the typical ponca , the Schioppettino di Vigna Traverso is born from an approach that places meticulous care of the vineyard and an extremely rigorous selection of grapes at its centre.
" It's extremely painstaking and demanding work, but it represents one of the fundamental aspects of our winemaking," explains Stefano Traverso. "Hand-picking, immediate chilling of the grapes, processing the next day, and grape-by-grape selection allow us to more precisely express the characteristics of each harvest and the terroir from which the grapes come ."
The harvest is still done entirely by hand , with an initial selection directly in the vineyard. Each parcel is harvested and vinified separately, allowing for the enhancement of its specific soil and climate characteristics and preserving its identity. Once harvested, the grapes are immediately chilled and processed the following day, a technical choice that preserves the aromatic freshness and quality of the fruit.
The selection process for red wines is particularly meticulous. After the initial sorting between the rows, the grapes undergo a meticulous check that combines advanced selection technologies with a final, indispensable manual evaluation. This is a true berry-by-berry selection, designed to ensure that only the finest raw materials reach the winery.
In the cellar, after a seven-day cryomaceration and a fifteen-day maceration with daily délestage, the wine completes its journey with refinement in steel and subsequently in French oak barriques for at least twelve months, followed by a further period of rest in the bottle.
The result is a wine that elegantly expresses the personality of Schioppettino. A brilliant ruby red , it opens on the nose with floral notes of violet and cyclamen, followed by the characteristic hint of white pepper that identifies the grape variety. The aromatic profile then develops into blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry, and cherry, accompanied by nuances of rhubarb, gentian, and laurel. The finish recalls vanilla, licorice, and delicate balsamic and menthol sensations. On the palate, it is full-bodied, vertical, and direct , supported by a long, spicy finish that consistently recalls white pepper.
With this label, Vigna Traverso confirms its vocation for the great red wines of the Colli Orientali del Friuli, combining rigorous production, respect for the territory, and a constant pursuit of quality that begins among the rows and ends in the glass.
